Alere was founded in 1991 by Ron Zwanziger as SelfCare, SelfCare went public in 1996 and changed its name to Inverness Medical Technology (IMT) in 2000.

In 2001 the company sold its diabetes business to Johnson & Johnson and began to expand its remaining business through acquisitions of companies such as Wampole Laboratories, Ostex International, Binax, and Axis-Shield.

In 2004 the company launched the world’s first digital pregnancy test with Clearblue Digital Pregnancy Test.

Today Alere, as the company has been known since 2010, offers professional and consumer diagnostic tests, including tests for cancer, cardiovascular disease, drug abuse, infectious disease, lipid and cholesterol, HIV, tuberculosis, hepatitis B, and women’s health including pregnancy tests and fertility monitors.

Alere trades publicly on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol ALR, is #725 in the Fortune 1000, has 17,600 employees, and had $2.96 billion in revenue in 2014.

Dresser-Rand Company was formed in 1986 as a joint-venture between Dresser Industries and Ingersoll Rand.

When Dresser Industries merged with Halliburton in 1999 its stake in the joint venture was sold to Ingersoll Rand, who then sold it to private equity firm First Reserve Corporation for $1.2 billion. First Reserve took the company public the next year.

Today Dresser-Rand Company is a leading manufacturer of industrial rotating equipment including gas and steam turbines, hot gas expanders, control systems, and centrifugal and reciprocating compressors for use in the power, oil and gas, petrochemical, and chemical markets.

Regal Cinemas began in 1989 in Knoxville, Tennessee with Mike Campbell as CEO. The company grew quickly, opening more upscale cinemas in suburban areas.

Throughout the 1990s the company acquired several smaller theaters, including Act III Theaters, Cobb Theaters, RC Theaters, and National Theater Corp.

History

After becoming overextended and filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, Regal Cinemas merged with Edwards Theatres and United Artists Theaters and became the namesake of the new company.

Regal operates the second-largest theater circuit in the United States, with over 7,307 screens in 564 theaters as of June 2016. The three main theatre brands operated by Regal Entertainment Group are Regal Cinemas, United Artists Theatres, and Edwards Theatres.

In late 2017, Regal was acquired by Cineworld for $3.6 billion. It is unknown if Cineworld will move Regal’s current headquarters, which are located in Knoxville, Tennessee.

W.R. Grace & Co.

W.R. Grace & Co. was founded in 1854 by William Russell Grace who had left Ireland due to the potato famine and moved to Peru. Grace started the company to buy harvested guano (bird droppings) in Peru which it then sold in North America and Europe.

Guano has high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus and was used for gunpowder and fertilizer.

Today the company operates through three major segments. Grace Catalyst Technologies produces catalysts used in chemical manufacturing processes. Grace Construction Products manufactures concrete and specialty building materials. Grace Materials Technologies manufactures sealants, coatings, and materials.
