Duchess Restaurant was founded in 1956 by brothers Harold and Jack Berkowitz in Milford, Connecticut. The chain now has 14 locations, all owned by Berkowitz and Lavin family members throughout southwestern Connecticut.

History

Duchess Restaurant offers a casual/fast food type of dining experience with typical American cuisine such as hamburgers, hot dogs, and French fries. Duchess differs from other types of fast food chains as they have produce delivered to each location daily. Food items are cooked fresh when ordered, nothing is pre-cooked and sitting under heat lamps. Chicken burgers and nuggets are hand cut from real chicken breasts, breaded and fried by hand.

The company offers a wide range of alternative food options, such as egg white only omelets, low-carb wraps, and salads.

Schlotzsky’s was founded in 1971 by Don and Dolores Dissman. The first location was in Austin, Texas, and the menu consisted of one sandwich, which could be altered slightly by removing or adding different meats.

From this one sandwich and one location, Schlotzsky’s has grown to more than 350 company-owned and franchised locations throughout the U.S. In 2006, Schlotsky’s was purchased by Focus Brands. All Schlotzsky’s locations are being remodeled to include brighter colors and updated menus.

Nestle, founded in Sweden in 1866, when two Swiss businesses joined forces. These companies, headed by Henri Nestle and Charles and George Page, began an aggressive campaign to expand their business into Europe, then the America’s, and beyond.

History

The company grew extensively after both WWI and WWII. Nestlé’s products include baby food, medical food, bottled water, breakfast cereals, coffee and tea, confectionery, dairy products, ice cream, frozen food, pet foods, and snacks.

Nestle is now the biggest food and beverage company in the world when measuring revenue. The company had revenue in 2017 of $91.6 billion. The company has expanded tremendously over their 152-year history, far beyond their condensed milk and infant formula beginnings.

In 1984, the company acquired Carnation, one of the largest dairy manufacturers in the US at the time. Later that same decade, the company acquired Friskies, a cat food manufacturer, as well as Coffee-Mate and Rowntree Mackintosh, candy makers whose brands include Kit-Kats and Smarties.

The company has 447 factories in 194 countries and employs almost a half a million persons. Nestle has 64 brands and has joint ventures with at least 8 other global companies, including General Mills and Coca-Cola.

Nestle Health Science has made numerous acquisitions in the past decade, including Vitaflo, CM&D Pharma, Prometheus Laboratories, and Vital Foods.

In May of 2015, Food Safety Regulators from the Uttar Pradesh in India found that samples of Nestlé’s leading noodle brand, MAGGI, had up to 17 times beyond permissible safe limits of lead in addition to heavy quantities of monosodium glutamate. India’s government made public that it was seeking damages of nearly $100 million from Nestlé India for “unfair trade practices” following the June ban on Maggi noodles.The suit was finally settled for 6,400 million rupees in August of 2015. Nestlé destroyed 400 million packets of Maggi products and sales resumed in November of 2015.

In 2017, the company moved their USA headquarters from Glendale, California, to Rosslyn, Virginia.

Rubio’s Coastal Grill was founded in 1983 by Ralph Rubio when he and some friends were fishing in San Felipe, Baja, California. He loved the fish tacos served in town and wanted to open his own restuaurant with the same type of food in his hometown of San Diego, California. The original location was called Rubio’s Mexican Grill and it featured French fries, fish tacos, and calamari.

History

This casual dining chain now has 193 locations and has plans to open 8 more locations in Florida. The company employs 4,000 people and had annual revenue in 2013 of $200 million.

The company uses Alaskan pollock as their source of fish, which is then battered and fried, typically served in a corn tortilla. While fish taco’s are popular in California, they are still uncommon in many parts of the U.S.

The company was forced to close abuot 7% of its locations after the coronavirus and subsequent quarantine of 2020.

To celebrate its reopening after the COVID-19 crisis, the company is offering a free childs dinner each Wednesday with every adult entree purchased through the month of September.
