Shoe Show was founded in North Carolina in 1960 by Robert Tucker. The company operates a chain of shoe stores across the US under various names including Shoe Show Mega, The Shoe Department, Encore, Shoebilee!, Burlington Shoes, and Shoe Show.

Today, Shoe Show has more than 1,150 locations in 36 states and had annual revenue in 2015 of $6.2 billion. It has made numerous acquisitions over the years, including Burlington Shoes in 1986, as well as Shoebilee! in 2002.

History

Shoe Show stores are well known for their play areas, which keep childen busy while parents shop for shoes. The company carries a wide range of name brand shoes, including Nine West, Skechers, Rockport, and Converse.

In March 2023, the company acquired Half-Moon Outfitters for an undisclosed amount.

All stores feature particular items and include common household furniture such as bedroom furniture, dining room furniture, furniture for kid’s rooms, rugs, and home decor.

The company is also a sponsor of NASCAR racing since 2005.

Founder and CEO Barney Visser is well-known for keeping a low profile and prefers to remain out of the spotlight.

Dorney Park goes back as far as 1860. Long before it became an amusement park, it belonged to Solomon Dorney, who had a fish hatchery and summer resort. Dorney decided that a public attraction would be more profitable than raising fish, so in 1870 he converted his estate into a public area, which featured a hotel, restaurant, games, and playground type rides. By the early 1880’s, Dorney added mechanical rides, which was the official start of Dorney Park as an amusement park.

Today, Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom, which is owned by Cedar Fair, boasts 8 roller coasters, 18 water rides, with a total of 59 rides, including Steel Force, the 9th longest roller coaster in the world, and the second longest on the East coast.

The company introduced a new type of wristband called Fast Pay, which allows park goers to preload their wrist band with money, therefore eliminating the need to carry cash. Wristbands are scanned and the money deducted from the person’s account. This program, which started in 2013, has been very successful.

History

The company was sold to Luxottica Group in 1999 for $640 million. Today, Ray-Ban continues to be one of the most popular selling sunglass brands in the world. The popular Wayfarer model was released in 1952. In the late 1950s, the company released a more squared off style called Caravans, which were popular in the 1970s after Robert DeNiro wore this style in the movie Taxi Driver.

The black market is full of fake Ray-Ban items, with the Better Business Bureau stating that Instagram was the latest source of an advertising scam operating in October 2018.

The company has approximately 55,000 employees and has US headquarters based in Mason, Ohio.

Slumberland Furniture was founded in 1967 by current CEO Ken Larsen in Little Canada, Minnesota. The company operates a chain of mattress and furniture stores in the Midwest. Originally, the company sold mattresses and La-Z-Boy recliners.

History

Today, the company has more than 123 stores in 12 states. Slumberland began franchise operations in early 1970’s. The company is the largest seller of La-Z-Boy recliners, sofa beds, and sofas, as well as one of the top selling companies in the US of Sealy and Simmons brand mattresses.

In addition to recliners and mattresses, the company also offers other household items and furniture including dining room tables, stand alone chairs, entertainment centers, side tables, night stands and linens.

Despite the coronavirus, Slumberland continues to open franchise locations, such as this one in Peoria in March 2021.

Local Slumberland locations donate mattress sets to the needy each year around the holidays and the 2020 season was no different.
