Hurley International

Hurley International was founded in 1999 by Bob Hurley, who spent years working in surfboard shops shaping the boards. Originally owning the rights to the Billabong name, his lease was not renewed, and Hurley International was born.

Today, the company designs and sells a wide range of beach items, including swimwear for men and women, wetsuits, clothing, sunglasses, hats, and backpacks. Hurley products are sold online and through retailers in both the US and Canada. Although the company no longer sells surfboards, they still maintain a surfing club.

In 2002, Hurley International was sold to Nike for an undisclosed amount. Headquarters for Hurley remain in Costa Mesa, California.

Kaenon Sunglasses was founded in 2001 by two brothers who loved sailing but found most sunglasses not to their liking. Steve and Darren Rosenberg decided to create their own brand of specialized polarized sunglasses for outdoor enthusiasts.

The company is best known for their proprietary SR-91 polarized lens material, although the sunglass line up has three categories; Luxury Performance, Lifestyle Performance, and Kore Performance. The SR-91 proprietary material is used only by Kaenon Polarized and is found in every pair of sunglasses, including prescription lenses.

As of December of 2015, Kaenon Polarized Sunglasses is now a subsidiary of OluKai, Inc. Company headquarters remain in Newport Beach, California.

Food Bazaar, founded in 1988, owns and operates a chain of supermarkets in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Founder Frances An, Korean born, but who lived for many years in Argentina, discovered when he moved to New York that many grocery items he was accustomed to buying were not available or were very difficult to find. He opened his own store in Queens, New York, with the idea that a wide variety of foods should be available to everyone.

The company offers imported food items from around the world to help people make authentic food dishes. The stores also carry natural and organic food items in addition to the usual meat, milk, and bread. As of 2016, the company had 25 locations in the tri-state area. Food Bazaar regularly partners with numerous non-profit organizations by providing substantial food donations and hosting many community events year-round.

Food Bazaar is still owned and operated by the An family and has headquarters in Brooklyn, New York.

Raymour and Flanigan Furniture, originally called Raymour’s Furniture, was established by brothers Bernard and Arnold Goldberg in 1947. The company is the largest furniture retailer in the Northeast and the 7th largest in the US overall.

History

The company has more than 110 locations in the Northeastern part of the US. Best known for its wide range of furniture, including cherry wood and denim sofas, Raymour has been expanding slowly, usually via acquisitions, such as Futurama in 2007 and Alpert’s Furniture,as well as Levitz Furniture in 2008.

In 2011, the company began to include other items to their line up, rather than rely on furniture alone. Popular household items that were added include rugs, lamps, wall art, throw pillows, and artificial plants and flower arrangements.

In December 2020, the company announced that it was hiring an addtional 1,000 persons due to increased sales.

The company maintains a corporate office in Liverpool, New York.

Gillette Shave Club

Gillette Shave Club is a new idea for a very old company. Founded in 1901, Gillette, now owned by Procter and Gamble, is perhaps one of the best-known names and top-selling brands in razors and blades in the US and around the world.

Their new shave club is in response to the growing number of people who are just plain busy and do much of their ordering online. The club is very easy to use. Customers select the razor they want to buy, then select how many blades they want shipped to their house and how often. The company has even started a text to reorder service that gives clients a 4th order free after they buy three. Customers can buy just one time, of course, but the real savings are delivered when subscriptions are ordered.

There are other shave clubs, but since its inception in 2015, Gillette has been the leader. P& G estimates that online subscriptions of shave clubs will increase by 25% in the next year. Headquarters for Gillette are located in Boston, Massachusetts.
