Waymo

Waymo is a self-driving car development company and a subsidiary of Google’s parent company Alphabet.

The company was started by Sebastian Thrun, a co-inventor of Google Street View. The development team consisted of 15 Google employed engineers, who won the 2005 DARPA prize of $2 million.

History

Their self-driving cars began testing in 2009. Some states had issues with the vehicles as all traffic and parking laws were made with the idea that a human being was driving and was ultimately responsible.

Nevada passed laws in 2011 allowing for special plates and identification of self-driving cars but still required that one person is behind the wheel in case of emergency or malfunction.

In 2014, the company unveiled a new prototype with no controls at all – no brake pedal, steering wheel, or gas pedal. This vehicle, nicknamed Firefly, was tested in San Francisco, California, as well as in Santa Clara, California, as well as Austin, Texas. No problems were encountered.

Google’s robotic cars have about $150,000 in equipment including a LIDAR system. The rangefinder is mounted on top of the vehicle, which uses a Velodyne 64-beam laser. This laser allows the vehicle to generate a detailed 3D map of the environment. The car then takes these generated maps and combines them with high-resolution maps of the world, producing different types of data models that allow it to drive itself.

There have been a total of 12 accidents involving self-driving cars, none of which were deemed to be the automated cars fault, but rather, persons either manually driving the vehicle or the other vehicle’s driver is at fault.

Waymo has begun an “early rider” program where these automated cars are being used by real persons in everyday situations. These tests are, at this time, only being conducted in Kirkland, Washington, Austin, Texas, metro Phoenix, Arizona, and the Mountain View, California, areas.

In 2017, the company introduced Chrysler hybrid mini-van Pacifica models, the first mass-produced, fully automated cars in the world.

In 2006, Paul Cusenza, Linda Avey, and Anne Wojcicki, worked together to build a new company that would provide genetic testing and interpretation of those results. At the time, Wojcicki was married to Google co-founder Sergy Brin. Google invested $3.9 million in the company.

The company offered a new genetic testing service which not only allowed the discernment of ancestry-related results but also offered risk assessment for possible health-related problems due to one’s ancestry. The FDA considers genetic testing “medical devices” , which means that FDA approval was necessary to market them. 23andMe failed to respond to the FDA’s concerns and, for a time, was forced to release only ancestry-related results.

History

Within a few years, however, the FDA and 23andMe, worked out their “misunderstandings” and approval to continue to sell the saliva-based kits was given. As of April 2017, FDA allowed marketing of 23andMe Personal Genome Service Genetic Health Risk (GHR) tests for 10 diseases or conditions. This marks the first time that the FDA has allowed direct to consumer tests to be conducted with FDA approval.

The company markets their product in the US, the UK, and Canada. As of September of 2017, the company has been listed as having a value of $1.5 billion. More than 2 million kits have been sold in the US alone.

In 2015, the company made a decision to NOT supply pharmaceutical companies with raw data, but rather to pursue the development of new drugs themselves.

Company headquarters are still located in Moutain View, California.

Gus’s World Famous Chicken started out in 1957 when Napoleon Vanderbilt, and his wife Maggie, began playing with a fried chicken recipe which would soon become famous. In Mason, Tennessee, word of this super crunchy, spicy chicken quickly spread. Not able to afford a place of their own, the Vanderbilt’s were selling their chicken out the back door of a tavern.

Friends and customers encouraged the pair to open their own restaurant, but the Vanderbilt’s were of modest means. Finally, friends bought or donated the materials to build and Mr. Vanderbilt, along with more friends, worked to construct their own brick and mortar restaurant.

History

Mr. Vanderbilt’s only son, Vernon “Gus” Bonner took over the restaurant before his father’s death. Gus loved the business and he found a devoted follower with the current CEO Wendy McCrory. McCrory began franchising operations and has expanded the company from 2 locations to 22 locations in less than 5 years. Current plans are to expand at a rate of 5 to 10 franchises each year. McCrory has also stated that she has received requests about franchising in China and South America, though those plans have yet to be finalized.

Gus’s famous recipe is known to only a handful of persons. The frying batter is made behind locked doors in Mason, Tennessee, and is given to franchises in frozen batches. In addition to fried chicken, the company offers fried sweet potatoes, potato salad, fried green tomatoes, coleslaw and pecan pie.

AMN Healthcare Services can trace its roots back to 1985 when it was founded by Gayle and Steve Francis of Nevada. The company placed its first traveling nurse at Washoe Medical Center in Reno, Nevada, that same year. The company moved headquarters to San Diego, California, in 1987.

History

Mr. Francis, a former Nevada state Assembly member, was CEO of the company until 2005 when former CFO Susan Salka was promoted to CEO. The company provides healthcare workforce solutions and staffing services in the United States. The company operates through three segments: Nurse and Allied Solutions, Locum Tenens Solutions, and Other Workforce Solutions

AMN Healthcare also offers allied staffing on a travel and local staffing basis under the Med Travelers and Club Staffing brands; physician permanent placement services under the Merritt Hawkins, MillicanSolutions, and Kendall & Davis brands to hospitals, healthcare facilities, and physician practice groups; vendor management systems, including ShiftWise and Medefis technologies.

White Fence Farm was founded in 1973 by Charles Wilson. The original restaurant is located in Illinois, however, the owners of the original location allowed only one franchise, the farm located in Colorado. Until recently, this franchise was operated by the Wilson family. The main farm is located in Lakewood, Colorado, with a few restaurants also being operated in Chicago, Illinois.

History

The company bills itself as having the “World’s Best Fried Chicken.” Chicken is pressure cooked, then quick frozen, where it remains until it is flash fried when ordered. In addition to having a restaurant, the farm also has a gift shop, petting zoo, candy shop, and large banquet facilities. The petting zoo is open most of the year, along with a kid’s playground and tree house. Live entertainment is frequently offered on weekends, with room for dancing.

The restaurant sits on beautifully landscaped grounds with a large pond. Peacocks and ducks are frequently seen and old time photography, as well as animated chickens, keep visitors entertained.

In November of 2014, the farm was purchased for an undisclosed amount by P&C Family Farms, LLC. Company headquarters at this time are still located in Lakewood, Colorado.
