Harvard Business School classmates Shelby Clark, Nabeel Al-Kad, and Tara Reeves were impressed by the business models they saw at Airbnb and eBay. They believed that they could accomplish something similar with cars, using the same basic peer-to-peer model. Founded in 2009, the company was originally named RelayRides. Later, the decision was made to renamed itself Turo in 2015.

Turo teamed with GM and their OnStar program to enable owners to unlock their vehicles using their smartphones. Although this was later discontinued, it was just the start for Turo to enable clients to work together.

History

Turo offers more than 800 makes and models of vehicles. Owners offer their cars, sometimes including delivery, in more than 2,500 cities and 300 airports across the U.S., Canada, and the United Kingdom.

Unlike other car rental agencies, Turo does not own the vehicles, nor does it perform maintenance. Turo simply provides the platform by which customers and car owners can connect.

People who wish to generate income from their vehicles while they’re not being used can register the cars with Turo online to be rented by other Turo members. The car owner states the time and place where the car will be available. A client wishing to rent the car reserves a specific time slot for the car online and pays for the amount of time they signed up for. Car owners can set their own prices or use Turo’s dynamic pricing suggestions. The company takes 25% of the sale. In most cases, renters pay approximately 35 percent less on average than a traditional rental car company.

Turo covers vehicles with up to $1 million of liability insurance to protect car owners against lawsuits for injuries and property damage. All renters are also screened for safety. Cars must have less than 130,000 miles and be a 2005 model or newer to be listed on the site, although there are a few exceptions allowed, such as listings for antique cars.

In 2015, Forbes listed Turo as #14 on their list of “Hottest On-Demand Startups. Headquarters are located in San Francisco, California.

Turo is frequently given excellent reviews by both customers and on review sites.

In November 2022, Turo announced that it would soon be in operation in Australia.

First National Bank of Omaha can trace its roots back to 1856, when a group of settlers crossed the Mississippi river and made camp in Nebraska. One of the group members, Thomas Davis, donated $600 in gold dust to found a new city charter; the city of Omaha. Later, two brothers, Augustus and Herman Kountze opened a bank in Omaha, appropriately named Kountze Brothers Bank. The company originally traded in gold, gold dust, and buffalo hides.

A second bank opened in 1863 and began doing business under the name of First National Bank of Omaha.

History

In 1913, the company opened up a separate department for women only so female clients would feel more comfortable in a business setting. Tellers were females who served their clients’ tea in a more home-like atmosphere.

The Great Depression caused more than 750 banks in Nebraska to close. First National not only met their customers demands for cash, they extended their hours and honored every withdrawal request, proving they were solvent.

In 1953, the company became the 5th bank to offer their own credit card.

In 2002 First National Bank was selected one of “America’s Best Companies for Working Mothers” according to Working Mother magazine, an honor that has been repeated annually due to on-site child development centers.

In 2003, the company was named “One of America’s Most Admired Companies” by peers at Fortune Magazine.

On February 22, 2018, the bank announced it would no longer renew its contract with the National Rifle Association as a result of customer feedback after a recent school shooting in Florida. The bank had offered special branded Visa cards to NRA members to support the group. This has resulted in a quite a bit negative criticism.

The company operates as a subsidiary of First National of Nebraska. Company headquarters is located in a 45 story skyscraper in downtown Omaha, Nebraska.

Fastrip stores began in 1968 as a small dairy farm, which offered milk, cheese, and other items from a small roadside store in Bakersfield, California. Within a few years, the company decided to open a larger store, offering more grocery items and in 1970, the company added Jaco gas pumps. Most stations simply list their gas as “Fastrip” but it comes from the locally made gas at Jaco.

The company slowly expanded within the greater Bakersfield/Oildale/Rosedale area until they expanded north into the Fresno, Sacramento, and Chico areas of California. In the early 1990’s, the company headed south into Riverside, San Bernardino, and Coachella markets.

The company has now expanded into Arizona and has four locations in Bullhead City, Nogales, and Casa Grande, with more locations expected to open over the next few years.

Fastrip currently has 53 locations in California and Arizona. The company looks for underserved areas with more rural populations that don’t have easy access to gas stations or grocery stores. A video went viral on Facebook after being posted in January of 2018, where an employee explained to a customer that they don’t allow the homeless inside their stores and call the police if they loiter outside. The employee was backed up by the corporate office at Fastrip stating that they don’t want their customers to feel unsafe or to be inconvenienced and that they were working with the Bakersfield Police towards a solution.

SmashBurger Corporate Office

Smashburger

Smashburger was founded in 2007 by Tom Ryan and Rick Schaden, and a little help from Consumer Capital Partners. Ryan had been in the restaurant business for many years, first working with McDonald’s and later, he helped Quizno’s roll out some of the most iconic sandwiches ever! What most people are unaware of is that Ryan has a PhD in flavor and fragrance. Using this knowledge, Ryan created a burger unlike any other.

The company began with one location in Denver, Colorado. Today, the company has more than 350 locations in 8 countries, as well as the US. The secret behind Smashburger is in the name. Each burger flavor has its own list of ingredients and is made the same way each time. An Angus chuck steak is ground down to a particular consistency, placed beneath a weight (smashed) and set on the griddle for 10 seconds. The weight is then removed and in another 90 seconds, the burger is done.

History

Besides smashing burgers, the company is perhaps best known for localized burger flavor that pertains to the region where the restaurant is located; Windy City Burgers and Sin City Burgers, for example. In addition to burgers, the company offers chicken sandwiches, milkshakes, fries, onion rings, and fried pickles. Beer and alcohol are also sold in most locations.

In 2015, Philipino based fast-food operator Jollibee Foods Corporation stated that they had acquired a 40% interest in the company for $335 million.

In early 2017, there was a shakeup in the executive structure of the company. At least 40 persons have been fired or asked to resign, including the CEO Michael Nolan and CFO Dennis Smythe. Reasons for the removal and change in management remains unclear.

Jollibee Foods Corporation announced in April of 2019 that they had now acquired a 100% share of Smashburger.

A Las Vegas, Nevada, Smashburger location demanded that a child’s service dog be removed from the building in June 2019. The corporate office for Smashburger stated that they are investigating the incident.

Cuisinart was founded in 1971 by Carl Sontheimer in Chicago, Illinois. After a trip to France where Sontheimer and his wife saw an early version of a food processor, Carl decided that he could make something similar which would drastically reduce the preparation time for cooks.

A graduate of MIT, Sontheimer took apart the prototype that he brought from France, he streamlined some items and refined others. In 1973, Sontheimer introduced “The Food Processor” at the National Housewares Expedition in Chicago, Illinois.

History

It didn’t catch on right away. Most people thought of the food processor as nothing more than a high priced blender. By 1975, however, his product was being used by Julia Childs and James Beard, as well as being featured in Gourmet magazine.

In 1977, the market suddenly turned for Cuisinart, with orders going from a few units each month to hundreds of units each month. By the end of 1977, sales had hit the $50 million mark.

Cuisinart began making several different models of food processors before branching out in 1986.

Today, the company makes toaster ovens, blenders, coffee makers, cookware, slow cookers, stand mixers, and much more. The company sells its products in almost every brick and mortar store, as well as online stores and their own online site, in the US, Mexico, Brazil, Spain, Canada, and Hong Kong. The company has a manufacturing facility in Rantoul, Illinois and headquarters are located in Stamford, Connecticut.

In 2016, the company put out a recall due to cutting blades which were held on by faulty rivets. Consumers reported that the blades were coming part and putting metal particles into their food.

In September 2020, the company introduced a new unit that processes then cooks the food called the CompleteChef.

Conair Corporation acquired the company in 1989 for $60 million.
