While working at a company he founded but no longer owned, James Dyson reinvented the vacuum cleaner in 1979. When he suggested that the company could use his idea, Dyson was fired. With startup money from friend Jeremy Fry, Dyson worked on his vacuum until he was satisfied that he had created the best vacuum in the United Kingdom, if not the world.

The Dyson company was established in 1991. Even though marketing told Dyson that the public wouldn’t like to see a transparent canister to hold the dust and debris, Dyson designed it anyway. This item became one of the company’s main selling points and has been copied by numerous other designers.

History

Until 2002, products were made in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, UK. Production of the popular vacuum was moved first to Malaysia, then to Singapore.

Today, the company is a leading manufacturer of vacuums, hand dryers, air purifiers, hair dryers, bladeless fans, and heaters.

Dyson announced in 2018 that he had plans to design and manufacture an electric vehicle that would be available for sale in 2020, hiring former BMW and Infiniti CEO Roland Krueger to head up the project. He later announced that he was moving headquarters from the UK to Malaysia due to problems with bureaucracy in the UK and not because of Brexit.

GreatCall

GreatCall was founded by Arlene Harris in 2006 to provide aging adults with easy to operate technology, such as cell phones. The Jitterbug phone was the first product released. Live Nurse, which allowed users to chat with a nurse 24/7, was launched in 2009.

The company is considered to be a connected health technology service. GreatCall provides cellular service through the Verizon network, mobile devices, apps, and a wearable “alert” device.

History

The company also offers MedCoach, designed to help clients manage their medications and in 2014, the company added Link, an alerting app.

GreatCall was acquired by Best Buy in August 2018 for $800 million.

In January 2019 GreatCall announced a partnership with long-term care insurance provider CNA. Policyholders with CNA will offer them an in-home passive remote monitoring solution, Lively Home, and its Lively Mobile medical alert device.

While Sinclair Broadcast Group can trace its roots back to 1958, when founder Julian Sinclair Smith and a group of investors operated a small FM radio station and later a UHF channel 45 for the Baltimore, Maryland, area, it wasn’t until the television station launched in 1971 that the company changed its name to Chesapeake Television Corporation. Smith’s son, David, changed the name again in 1985 to Sinclair Broadcast Group.

Today, the company is a publicly traded (on the NASDAQ) telecommunication conglomerate, controlled by the Smith family. The company is the largest television operator in the US (by number of stations) with 193 channels in more than 100 markets.

Sinclair also owns 4 multicast networks (Comet, Charge, Stadium, and TBD), as well as the Tennis Channel, one streaming service (STIRR) and 4 radio stations in the Pacific Northwest.

The company has faced strong criticism for its conservative slant on news, as well as attempting to persuade the Trump administration to loosen the rules regarding regulations about the concentration of media ownership.

In March 2017, Sinclair was in discussions with Tribune Media, hoping to acquire the company. Concerns about Sinclair potentially creating an oligarchy in the broadcast television industry, which led public interest groups to attempt to block the purchase. In August 2018, Tribune Media dropped their sales agreement and filed a lawsuit for $3.9 billion.

In January 2019, the company was heavily criticized for publishing anti-vaccine propaganda.

Poshmark was founded by Manish Chandra, Tracy Sun, Gautam Golwala, & Chetan Pungaliya in 2011. The company operates a mobile phone app which allows users to sell their gently used items and ship them to customers anywhere in the US.

Poshmark takes a 20% commission from items sold. Sellers can have their accounts suspended or completely removed from the site if they take sales offline or to a competitor. While some people have claimed to make several thousand dollars in a single month, (with one seller hitting $1 million in sales) others say that a lack of ratings or feedback from buyers leaves clients open to fraud.

Poshmark stated in August 2018 that sellers had made a combined income of $1 billion since the app was introduced.

Currently, the app is only for US users, but that might change in the future. Company headquarters are located in Redwood City, California.

Brothers Tony and Terry Pearce started their own manufacturing business in 1989 making wheelchairs and carbon fiber sporting goods. Over the years, the brothers developed 23 patented items for cushioning materials, fluids, and hyper-elastic polymers used in the manufacturing of shoes, toys, and medical devices.

In 2013, they created a machine called Mattress Max, which both manufactures and molds large pieces of elastic polymers into mattresses. Thus began the creation of the Purple Mattress.

History

The company also makes pillows, seat cushions and back cushions for chairs and other purposes, along with adjustable beds, platforms for their mattresses, sheets, and mattress protectors.

On July 27, 2017, Purple announced a merger with Global Partner Acquisition Corp (GPAC) with a value of $1.1 billion. Purple sells mostly online, but competition is stiff. In early 2018, the company began offering their product at Mattress Firm locations.
