Havertys Furniture was founded by brothers J.J. and Michael Haverty in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1885. The company did so well that within 3 years, the brothers moved the store to a larger location. By 1908, the company had 17 locations.

J.J’s son Clarence, who grew up sweeping the floors, wanted to be a bigger part of the business. His father gave him 8 locations and immediately began building new stores south of Atlanta.

History

Today, Havertys is one of the biggest names in furniture in the southern part of the US, with more than 100 locations in 16 states. The company went public in 1929 and barely survived the Great Depression.

In 2000, the company began making their own brand of furniture, which now makes up most of the company’s sales.

In April 2018, the Sherman, Texas, location closed after being in business for more than 30 years. Employees were offered employment at other locations.

In October 2018, the company posted third-quarter profits of more than 39%.

In June 2023, Havertys recalled its Concord Dual Power Reclining Chairs.

Headquarters for the company remain in Atlanta, Georgia.

Joe Miller was born in the back seat of a car in front of Boone’s Drug store in Boone, North Carolina. He would grow up in Boone and get his first job at this pharmacy. He enjoyed it so much, he went to school, became a pharmacist, went to work at this same drug store and eventually purchased it. Miller always loved art but didn’t know anything about it. He took some classes and soon, set up his own small section of art supplies in the drug store. He called it “Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff.”

What started off as a hobby with a few art supplies has now become a full-time business, with a warehouse and corporate office located on Industrial Park Drive in Boone, N.C.

History

In 2015, the company opened a second location in Ashville, North Carolina. Miller offers his art, as well as his art supplies, for sale on his website. The company ships worldwide.

The company offers a full range of art supplies, drawing, painting, and other art classes, as well as advice from the owner. The town of Boone recognizes Miller’s achievements and set aside September 9th as Joe Miller Appreciation Day.

Gristedes Supermarket Corporate Office

Gristedes Supermarket

Gristedes Supermarket was founded back in 1888 by German immigrant brothers Diedrich & Charles Gristede. They found work in a local market but soon opened their own gaslit store far from the center of town. Housewives who had to walk or take a carriage were happy to not have to travel so far. The store became so popular that the brothers soon opened 2 more locations.

The chain was sold to Southland in 1968 for $11.45 million. Southland, who also owns 7-11 stores, let the chain run on its own with very few changes or interference. By the early 1980s, however, Gristedes wasn’t doing as well and was sold to Red Apple Company in 1986 for $50 million.

History

Red Apple, owned by John A. Catsimatidis and operating in the Bronx as well as Manhattan, now became the largest supermarket chain in New York City. Gristede’s and Red Apple remained distinct, however. Red Apple had completed 14 Gristede’s remodels by the fall of 1987, including adding in-store delicatessens, bakeries, salad bars, hot takeout foods, and upscale cheese, prime-meat, and seafood sections.

To keep up with the evolving e-Commerce sales, the company launched its XpressGrocer.com site in December 2003. Gristede’s also began filling orders taken through Amazon in November 2004. The Amazon orders were available to be shipped anywhere in the United States, not just New York.

After losing nearly $1 million in fiscal 2002, the company posted a net loss of $11.6 million on sales of $279.69 million in fiscal 2003. The loss was attributed in part to opening seven new stores during the year. The blackout of August 14/15 in 2003 was partially responsible since it caused the loss of perishable food items, such as ice cream and milk.

In 2017, the company stated that it was interested in acquiring Fairway Markets. In early 2018, Patch.Com placed Gristedes on their list of the top 4 worst supermarket chains in New York.

ScotteVest Corporate Office

The ScotteVest was founded in Chicago, Illinois, by Scott Jordan in 2000. Jordan found that most jackets had only two pockets, which were not enough for all of his tech devices.

The ScotteVest is similar to a fisherman’s vest, but with more pockets, designed for holding a wide range of items, such as cell phones, small tablets, business cards, and eReaders. Some styles have 42 compartments.

History

Other designs incorporate flexible, detachable solar panels, designed to be used to charge gadgets, as well as seams that allow headphones to be threaded through them, preventing hanging cables from being caught on door handles or other items.

In December of 2013, the company estimated sales would hit $10 million, most of it from their website.

In January 2018, Jordan made a Facebook post stating that he advertised on Fox News because their viewers were “extremely gullible and f***ing idiots.” Jordan later removed the post.

Jordan has made new airline baggage fees a big selling point, stating that if you pack correctly, you can get by with one check on bag, your carry on, and one of his vests.
