HomeTap was founded in 2017 by entrepreneur Jeffrey Glass. Glass was already known in and around the Boston area as a startup master since he already created and successfully sold two startup companies. Glass started as an investor in HomeTap but became so enthralled by the idea, his involvement ended with him taking on the job of CEO.

The company works as a “loan alternative ” by offering people cash for a percentage of their home equity. When homeowners sell their property, they give Hometap an agreed-upon percentage of the sales price or the current appraised value.

Duolingo Corporate Office

Luis Von Ahn, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University, and his graduate student Severin Hacker wanted to create an app that would serve double duty, teach a foreign language and translate simple phrases. Duolingo was created in 2011 in beta form and released to the public in 2012.

Duolingo is a language learning platform and mobile app that allows users to slowly learn the basics of a new language. As of November 2019, the language-learning website and app offer 94 different language courses in 23 languages. In August 2018, the company had more than 300 million registered users around the world. The app has a free version supported by advertisers or a paid version that is ad-free.

Duolingo’s fastest-growing language is the Scottish language Gaelic. Although the language was just added in early December 2019, in less than one month, users have reached 127,000.

The company has it’s critics, with a Forbes interviewing noting that, even after using Duolingo to learn Spanish for 6 months, the CFO of the company was confused by the basic phrase of “Hablas Espanol?” ( Do you speak Spanish?).

Former colleagues Jennifer Rubio and Stephanie Korey, who had worked on the executive team at Warby Parker, founded Away in 2015. The pair wanted to create luggage that was easier, especially for women, that had everything frequent travelers would appreciate, such as USB ports.

The company grew quickly, selling more than $12 million in luggage in 2016, its first full fiscal year. The following year, with more than $50 million in sales, the company had to hire an additional 60 persons to handle the load.

To date, the company has sold more than 300,000 suitcases and is the highest funded, all-female start-up projects. The majority of sales occur online, but the company does have 4 brick and mortar locations in the US, including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Austin. The company recently opened a store in London as the company’s flagship store in the UK.

The carry on bag is the company’s most sought after piece, with celebrities posting photos of their bags on Instagram and the popular app SnapChat.

Online site The Verge posted an interview in December 2019 with Stephanie Korey, where she described her own workplace as being “toxic” and where employees were publically ridiculed on Stack. Korey apologized several times calling her words “simply wrong”, but the outcry was so strong, Korey resigned as CEO in late December 2019.

Scott Wolfe was working at his family’s construction business in 2005 after Katrina hit New Orleans. The inefficient manners used to get paid, as well as the delays and numerous requests to demand payment, were exhausting. Wolfe decided to create a more efficient payment platform. Originally named Zlein, Levelset was born in 2006.

The payment platform allows contractors to get paid faster. The average wait for payments in the construction industry is 83 days. This SaS platform cuts that time in half for most companies.

The company raised $30 million at the end of 2019 through Horizons Ventures.

PrecisionHawk Corporate Office

PrecisionHawk

PrecisionHawk was originally called WineHawk, manufacturing what are called drones, designed to frighten off birds over vineyards. With the introduction of cameras to drones, the company saw a chance to expand their business and renamed it PrecisionHawk in 2013.

The Lancaster drone was released in 2012, with DataMapper following in 2014. Agriculture continues to be a major source of clients for PrecisionHawk.

In December 2019, the company raised $32 million for drone management and analytic tools. According to Business Insider India, the future of farming lies with drones for everything from mapping to spraying.

History

PrecisionHawk also manufactures LATAS (Low Altitude Traffic and Airspace Safety). This is a drone safety platform launched as a platform to manage the millions of expected drones that will enter the airspace in the following decade.
