Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity was founded in Americus, Georgia, by Linda and Millard Fuller. The company operates a nonprofit, international, non-governmental organization that allows people to become homeowners by building newly constructed homes and charging only for the materials. All work is donated.

Habitat for Humanity operates in all 50 US states and in 70 countries. The company has helped more than 29 million people construct, preserve, or rehabilitate their homes.

Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn are two of the best-known faces of Habitat for Humanity. They have worked on numerous projects since 1984.

History

The company has received criticism for not training its volunteers sufficiently, which has led to serious injury and even death of some volunteers.

Habitat for Humanity also operates ReStores, which are retail outlets selling new and used building materials donated by others, as well as furniture. Proceeds from ReStores are used to construct housing within the community.

Due to the coronavirus crisis in the spring of 2020, most ReStores and building stopped for a period of time. As of late May 2020, most construction is continuing and ReStores have announced their re-opening dates, which vary around the country.

The first new home delivered since the coronavirus crisis was on May 22, 2020, to Angela Torres in Tacoma, Washington.

In April 2020, Honk added AI to its platform, including chatbot, that will not only make the app faster but will help to keep users informed each step of the way regarding their roadside assistance request.

Stash Financial, sometimes referred to as Stash Bank or just Stash was founded in 2015 by Brandon Krieg, David Ronick, and Ed Robinson. The company operates both a web platform and mobile apps, allowing users to incrementally invest small amounts.

Investors can use the web page or the app to invest as little as $5 into fractional shares of stock.

Users can invest in personal brokerage accounts, retirement accounts, traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs, or custodial accounts. Stash also offers financial education and automatic investing.

History

NerdWallet posted a review in January 2019 that this was a great app for those who are new to investing but that the $1 fee for accounts whose balance was less than $5000 was rather high and that users might find other services that were a better value.

Stash is one of the fastest-growing investment companies in the US and even during the tumultuous times of the coronavirus, the company managed to raise $112 million in series F funding in late April 2020.

In late April 2020, CNBC listed Stash in their articles regarding tricks for saving money, even during the quarantine.

TrueBill was founded in 2015 in San Francisco. The company operates an app that helps users eliminate unwanted charges from their bank accounts, including recurring subscriptions, retrieve funds for power and service outages, and hidden bank fees.

The company takes 40% of the savings they find for you. So if the app saves you $100, you will receive $60 and the company receives $40.

If the company cannot save you any money, you pay nothing.

History

The company also plans to offer automated bill paying, budgeting, automatic saving plans, and bill negotiation.

While there are many other apps that offer similar services, each of the other programs is set to do one thing. TrueBill aims to offer an all-in-one service.

As of October 2019, the company had 500,000 active subscribers.

Also in October 2019, TrueBill opened a new corporate office in Maryland.

As of April 2020, the company claims that it had canceled more than 100,000 subscriptions for its clients.

NURX was founded after two high school friends, Hans Gangeskar and Dr. Edvard Engesæth, had a conversation about female birth control. Both men came from Norway, which has single-payer health care and zero issues regarding birth control. This pair of friends decided that they could fill a need by offering women a variety of health care options, including birth control and HIV testing, through the mail.

Within 3 days of launching the site, the company began receiving national attention through a variety of media, causing a growth rate of 30 percent every week.

During the quarantine period in the spring of 2020, NURX began to see an increase in requests for birth control, in many cities as much as a 50 percent increase.

History

As of May 7th, 2020, the company states that it has served more than 500,000 patients.

In July 2019, NURX expanded to the state of Kentucky, where an estimated 260,000 women have no access to healthcare, contraceptives, or the morning-after pill.

As of March 20, 2020, customers can ask for a test kit for the coronavirus. They need to fill out a questionnaire and a healthcare professional will determine if a testing kit would be helpful in determining if the patient has COVID-19.
