Patrick M. Byrne founded Overstock.com in 1997 to sell surplus and returned inventory of retail stores, liquidating the inventories of at least 18 failed dot-com companies at prices that were below wholesale.
The first year of operation, Overstock.com had $1.8 million in revenue.
The company showed a profit for the first time in 2008. In 2009 the company resumed making losses and finally became profitable in 2010.
In recent years Overstock.com has expanded to sell new merchandise. From 2004 to 2011 the company offered online auctions but the practice was ultimately retired.
Overstock.com began rebranding in 2011 as “O.co” in an effort to simplify and unify its international operations. However, customer confusion led to a temporary retraction of the rebranding.
Today Overstock.com is an internet retailer providing discounts on brand name, non-brand name, and closeout merchandise in the United States and internationally. The company also has a vehicle selling service.
In September 2018, the company announced that it was selling Bitcoin through its website using Bitsey Wallet.
In August 2019, CEO Patrick Byrne stepped down after making claims that he had been an FBI informant and that he was involved romantically with a Russian spy. Jonathan Johnson was named as interim CEO.
Many products are made specifically for overstock.com and the company also sells merchandise of other retailers through its website. Overstock. com has 1,800 employees and had $1.745 billion in revenue in 2017.

I made a purchase online in 2019. Then I found out afterwards that if I returned the product, I would receive a credit on my credit card. I was told this in 11-2019. That did not happen. Then I called and they told me I had an instore credit instead of $99.02 on 1/6/2020 for order number 259614960. So now I try to find out on line how to apply the credit towards a purchase and no person will speak to you. You can text or chat, but that is virtual and not specific and goes in circles. I did have a phone number to call the billing that helped me last year (855-810-2546) but today they told me they could not help me and transferred me to the online customer service that again, never helps with chats or texts. I did send the following email but I expect virtual responses and my case number is 12794151. I need help to get this resolved now. This is unacceptable customer service and this company should not be able to keep my $99.02 and not help with a person. I reported this to the BBB today and requested their assistance to call the Corporate office for help.
Your response by PHONE would be appreciated. 210.413.XXXX

Buyer beware with Overstock.com. I ordered millet spray and what I received was a cell phone case. I contacted Overstock and so called Natasha said they could not issue a refund because it came from a second seller that I had to deal with the second seller. I asked to speak to her manager so called Racheal and she would not speak to me. Overstock can sure take your money but they do not want to refund it. Very bad customer service.

I, too, have been severely burned by Overstock’s horrible customer service and inaccuracies on their website for Club O benefits! BUYER BEWARE!
Early February, 2020, I actually contacted the company’s “Executive Relations” dept and their supervisor is completely off… maybe there’s a language barrier? I repeatedly told them: “I’ll take in-store credit.” They credited my Visa account minus the UPS fee so I paid the UPS fee!!
I was a Club O member and they charged me for UPS return shipping. After a week of my texting/emailing/phone calls (hours of my life) they all refused to credit my shipping fees. Their complete lack of understanding my request is baffling! (Again questioning a language problem?)
I am now sending all my printed documentation to Overstock CEO Jonathan Johnson at their corporate office:
CEO JONATHAN JOHNSON
Overstock.com
6350 South 3000 East
Salt Lake City, Utah 84121
Maybe if we all send CEO Johnson our complaints on paper, USPS, to his office, he’ll realize his company has some serious customer service problems.
I did get my Club O membership fee credited but am out over $50 for UPS shipping … $50 not a lot compared to the rest of you but, to me, it’s the principle. I joined Club O to save shipping fees and I have been burned. And truly frustrating is how condescending their executive relations supervisor was!
Good luck to all.

Very happy with overstock.com for my purchase quality and price. No complaints ever about my transactions with overstock.com. I want you to know that the site which offers a reward of 4 free magazine subscriptions (cost actually $2.00 each) did not take my order. I tried 2 times to enter the billing info as required and I was cut off by their response that I used too many attempts to enter info. I was instructed to try a different method of payment. My 2 attempts were each valid but the site cut me off. This is becoming a bogus setup on other sites as well. I won’t ask for the $8.00 returned to me if you will look into it.

I also will never order from overstock.com again. This is my 1st and last order. I placed an order on March 8, 2019. I received an email to confirm delivery March 12, 2019. I waited until March 17, 2019 to call to give some leeway. The representative said she will contact the shipper and I’ll receive notification in 1-2 days on the status of my order. Well, I received nothing. I called back on March 20, 2019 and said I want to cancel my order. I received an email confirmation that my order was cancelled. Also in that email is states, “A refund has been issued to your original form of payment.” I checked my bank and no refund. I had to call again today. It was explained that the cancellation was on the replacement. What replacement I asked? The rep. talked in circles as to why a replacement and why my account has not been credited. So he said he did what he needed to so that my money will be returned. This is horrible customer service. I had to call 3 times. Unacceptable to me. I work in customer service so I understand this is not an easy job, however, that does not negate the fact that what was told to me was not done. I did not receive my order which, I guess, was in limbo. I was not provided an explanation. I did not received my refund, yet. I know I’m only 1 customer and I am sure it doesn’t matter to overstock that a customer is lost. I wonder what Mr. Byrne would say if he knew of this awful process. I was looking for his email address because I wanted to tell him myself but I am giving up. This isn’t worth my time.

I will never order from overstock again. The order received was the wrong product. We ordered a coffee table-end table set and an extra end table. What we received was 2 end tables. Called customer service to get the coffee table shipped, the response was we can only send as a set and we would need to return the extra end table. We received the set and called overstock to inform we received the correct order. Overstock issued a pick up order for UPS to ship back so we would not get charged for extra table. Our credit charge was charged for the extra end table and customer service said we never returned the product. We received a confirmation email from UPS that it was delivered and the signature who accepted the table, We have called several times and emailed to receive the credit and all we hear we need the information that it was returned. We have sent this in numerous times. We have emailed requesting that information was received and that they were working on giving us our credit. The company has never responded. This company is a crook and steals peoples money. Poor customer service and ordering department. So Goodbye overstock- never will order again. I will let everyone I know not to order from overstock due to severe issues in sending out wrong products and then never crediting for returned items.

Purchased a pair of lamps. Total cost was $59 but with my points final cost was $40. When they arrived noticed that the area in which you screwed the bulb was made of plastic. The details on the website did not indicate this. Tried to return the lamps. Was told I would be charged $24.82 for return shipping. Contacted Overstock and was told that because the lamps were not defective I was responsible for the shipping. Tried to explain this was a fire hazard because the bulb would get hot which could potentially melt the plastic. Was told this would not happen. How many times have there been fires caused by materials being hot and melting. I will not purchase anything again. The money might seem small but it is the lack of concern for potential danger.

I saw this item. I love it and purchased the item. Got it home opened the box to put it together and the seat was damaged. The wood was split in half and the threads were coming a loose in the cushions. Made several attempts to get a refund and spoke with multiple associates and they ensured that they would contact me to get the issue resolved. I also sent in the photos to the third party which is costway where the items were shipped from. And the issue still isn’t resolved. I will never purchase from overstock again. Very poor communication and bad customer service on both parties and very cheap merchandise. I sent over the photos to them on 4/23/18 and still haven’t heard from either company…. I also. Posted a review and it was denied. The asked me to edit it. I have all the proof from emails and where I sent pics and how many times I have contacted them about a refund.

Ordered a mattress and box spring-Got the mattress- no foundation. After two weeks, contacted Overstock, they said because it’s freight, it takes longer. They verified my contact info. Today, I check my spam folder-fine three [generalized heading] emails from O saying they can’t contact me, and is returning the item AND charging me ONE HUNDRED FIFTY DOLLARS for their trouble. I have called, e mailed, used Chat- NO help. I will now be contacting BBB. and Pay Pal.

Ordered two Serenity black sofas from OS.com.Had these shipped directly to my vacation home in the Caribbean.Easy seamless process.Fabulous service.Told all my friends.
On the website the sofas were described as black leather. On the materials chart: leather, foam and metal.Imagine my shock when two plastic sofas arrived!.complete with velcro fastened backs.
Since we were having an overhaul we checked the sofas for damage but only one month later placed them in the living room.the shock sank in.
We contacted OS.com who still continue to fraudulantly sell these sofas. We are waiting for a full refund And for OS.com to arrange the packing and return of these plastic items.

Overstock customer service and returns department evidently have no communication between them. I had to call customer service 4 times over a 2 month period to get information on 2 phones that I returned to them. Each time I have called the representative stated to me that they see where the phones were returned and puzzling to them they did not understand why it was not processed properly by the return department/warehouse. The representative would state that it would be processed in 3-5 business days. The same thing happened last year on a return as well. I had to contact their corporate office to get the credit back to my card on numerous occasions through customer service. I find it annoying and a lack of proper training in both departments. I would not recommend them to anyone ever and at this point I am leery of ever ordering from them again.

Making this shirt in a nutshell I have been trying to get a “non-damaged/defective” sectional delivered to my home that I ordered and paid for 02/20/2017. To date we have had the same right end recliner sent to us from their warehouse damaged 4 times. This last time they sent a whole new sectional and yet again it is defective. This is a packaging/shipping problem that begins in their warehouse. I have taken pics of the boxes every time they arrive because the minute I see the frame sticking through the box I know it’s going to be damaged. I donated my original furniture (over sized leather recliner w/cup holders heated seat and massager, another regular lazy boy recliner, a sofa and a chase lounge to a family that needs the furniture. The value of that furniture alone to replace is well over $4000. Now if I can’t get a sectional that is NOT damaged then I will have an empty living room and no way to replace what was donated. This is absolutely the worst experience I have ever had and once this is over will probably never order nor rwccomend OVERSTOCK to anyone.

Purchased an item signing up for an Overstock credit account with deferred interest, which is why I signed up for the credit account. Yet after two billing cycles, I was charged interest. Contacted Overstock and was told to call the credit company. Contacted the credit company and they noted the problem and filed a “dispute” which could take up to 90 days. Will I buy from Overstock again? Most likely not at this point, because of the time to deal with this problem all for a $7 interest charge, which may or may never get fixed. Does anyone at Overstock care or have the time to make just one customer happy enough to want to remain a customer? That is the question since just my one experience does nothing for thier bottom line. Yet if they did try to make it up to me I would buy from them again. Such is the corporate situation… typically.

The worst customer service I have ever experienced in my life! For the past 7 weeks I have been waiting for an item, over a $1k dollar item. I have been given the run around by everyone at Overstock. Advised to contact Lodeso, the shipping company. Shipping company doesn’t know where the item is, tells me to contact Overstock. I waited the expected 4 weeks, plus 7-10 shipping days as listed on Overstocks website for an oversized item. I started calling everyday for the last 2 weeks requesting my money back. Not ONE Overstock rep gave me the courtesy to call me back. After 2 weeks of “I will have someone contact you” I had to have my husband, who is currently deployed call on my behalf. Shame on you Overstock for stealing from me and my family while he protects and serves you. After 7 weeks, I was just given a partial $500 credit as the company has to be advised that I rejected the item. I never got the item! The shipping company said it’s on a 18 wheeler and don’t know where it is. I will continue to call everyday until you give me my money. I will share this horrible experience with everyone I know.

I have purchased literally thousands of dollars in merchandise from you. I recently placed an order and received a call from one of the most hateful and disrespectful people I have ever had the displeasure of speaking with. I was informed that since I placed an order for a “high risk item” I had to verify who I was and why I was ordering this. REALLY! I ordered a pair of shoes!! Not an assault rifle. After 15 minutes of being grilled about previous addresses, I was then told I needed to take a picture of my drivers license and a selfie and email it to him. I will NOT be harassed for ordering a pair of shoes! You have lost a customer and more importantly my money. I am currently enjoying my “high risk” shoes that Amazon shipped with no problem at a lower price.

I have been a customer of Overstock.com for years. Any time I’ve ordered anything, I’ve been extremely happy. And if there was a problem with the item, Overstock took it back and paid for the shipping.
That being said, I have been in the market for a new sofa and loveseat and after much searching and comparing, found the set that I wanted on Overstock.com. I was ready to order and did one more internet check using the item description. I was very surprised to find the EXACT SAME SOFA AND LOVESEAT (sold as a set) for $444 LESS than on Ebay.com ($300 less when you add the sales tax). The photos were identical down to the same pillows on the items. I was even more surprised (shocked is more like it) to discovered that these items were offered by – are you ready? – Overstock.com. So, I called Overstock and asked about it and asked if they would match the Ebay price. I was told that they could give me $100 off but no more than that.
I did order the items — from Ebay. I am stunned that I could purchase items for so much less from the same company on a different web site. According the the Ebay site, Overstock is offering the same warranty.
So, my question to Overstock, what’s with this? Should I always go to Ebay to make sure I’m getting the best price. No where on the Overstock site does it say, “Hey! Check us out on Ebay – you may save big bucks!”
Hopefully I won’t have any issues with the sofa/loveseat when they arrive.
Barbara Codner says
I recently purchased an item from Overstock. It has been a week and I was charged for the item but it hasn’t been shipped. I called customer service to have the order cancelled and their hands were tied. I also called the vendor directly and I got a voicemail message. I’ve been a customer of Overstock for years and have never had any problems before. Allowing outside vendors control of shipping and delivery is a very bad idea. This is a new concept for Overstock and it’s already failing.
Bridget Warner says
I’ve been ordering from Overstock for most of the 17 years you’ve been in operation. Usually the items have been adequate, but the quality is now steadily going down hill: Will cut to the chase regarding the most recent & glaring issue: I purchased a pillowtop mattress-pad for a full-sized bed; it arrived in a box that was WAY too small for it, bulging all over to the extent it literally popped out of the box upon opening! WHO IS WORKING IN YOUR SHIPPING DEPARTMENT? I laundered it and did noticed beforehand the cheesy cover. Oh brother, twelve (12) of the “little pillows” burst open in the dryer, set on low! I got a return label but couldn’t put the pad back in the box it came in because it didn’t fit. Had to buy an adequate-sized one to return in to you that I should be compensated for but don’t expect to given your now out-of-control company. In conclusion, the sub-standard mattress pad was shoddily packaged and a seventy-six-year-woman had to go buy a box to return it to you, then drive to a UPS Store with it, then order a mattress pad from Amazon. Get your company together! BW

Worst and most disrespectful service I’ve recieved so far in my life!!!! So I filled out the application for the overstock credit card, they approved me for 1500. So I put in an order, this is where the fun starts. Overstock sends me an email stating there’s more information they need in order to ship my product, so I play along and call. They start asking me all these intense security questions as if it’s an interrogation, made me feel very uncomfortable. After their bs security spiel they tell me that they need further information and wanted me to send a copy of my government issued I.D, so I did. After receiving my fax, after I’ve done everything they asked of me they tell me that I CANT USE MY OVERSTOCK CREDIT CARD!!! So I have an open account with overstock that I can’t use, this place is a freaking JOKE. And I will do everything in my power to spread the fact that this place is disrespectful towards their customers, if it’s the last thing I do.

I am not getting any help from the contact customer service on the main website. I chose and paid for Expedited shipping which specifically said order will arrive on Nov. 24th. It arrived on Nov 30th. I paid a large amt. for that shipping and want my shipping returned to my Club O Rewards. All I keep getting is a run-around of false information.

I’m confused. What is the difference between the Silver Overstock Store Card and the Mastercard you offer? Are they both credit cards? Can they both be used other than online at your site? You need a side-by-side comparison chart! I received my silver card but haven’t activated it due to my not understanding the differences. Why two cards?
Thanks

I spoke with *****, a manager, this past Sunday, between 2 and 3pm. It was an escalated call. I had found product that cost less.I was told that I had to match the model number.I did. Then I was told that the company had to be registered with the BBB.They are not. But—–if one looks them up on the BBB website their rating is A+. Then I was told the product had to be the same color. You had a photo of the product. The other site: Cut at home had an illustration. The SAME illusration as the manufacturer, Spellbinders.I was told they had to be the same color-2 were. This manager had me jumping through hoops-everytime I met your policy, she would pull out another policy. She even stated that I had price matches in the past-what does that have to do with the price of tea in China? I was always grateful that I received price matches and even let the customer service rep’s supervisors know how wonderful your customer service was. Even in a review, although I was unhappy with the product, I still did a shout out for your customer service reps.I admit I got angry and lost my cool, but this employee was impossible to work with-the decision was made long before she reached for the phone. She even had the audacity to insinuate that it was the supervisor’s call! However, I purchased 2 dies, but not the one I really wanted. Shame on me for giving you my money. Shame on Stacy for being an insufferable employee to a customer.

The ball has been dropped and a important order and I have been treated with no voice. Normally Overstock is kind, great customer service however 2015 off to a rough start. Two orders tuned into a nightmare.
One taken care, a delivery at 7 AM unannounced bathtub man banning at my clients door.
2nd A LOST ORDER – treated like its my fault and nothing can be done and to quote overstock.com “you can always go find it somewhere else” after waiting for a month. shipping lost it, called and called, promised it would be delivered to find out after a week still noting and to quote overstock.com “this is our procedure’. Still no help, not email explaining so I can show my client, and contractor the the hold up is overstock. not me.
To whom do I get to speak to that cares to help my client a respected doctor, me a respected designer that gave your company several plugs on Houzz and my high-end contractor.
Please can someone help us! Because its not getting done the way it should for YOU losing our order! Serval calls have been made.
Thank you and I hope this can be resolved asap.
