Murphy USA was founded in 1996 in El Dorado, Arkansas as a spin-off of Murphy Oil. The company operates a chain of gas stations, most often in close proximity to Walmart stores.

Currently, the company has 1,400 locations in 26 states. While most stations are located near Walmart stores, there are 240 stand-alone gas stations that also feature convenience stores, known as Murphy Express. In 2016, the company announced that it intended to shift its focus away from Walmart and open more independent locations.

Terrible Herbst Oil Company, known simply as Terrible Herbst, was founded in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 1959 by Jerry Herbst. His father, Ed, owned a gas station in Chicago, Illinois, in the late 1930’s. The company claims that Ed invented the click off nozzle for gas pumps, which allowed Ed to pump more gas since there was no need to sit with each car. His competitors complained that “This terrible Herbst is going to put us out of business.” Jerry found the name amusing and decided to name his company after his father’s moniker.

The company owns a chain of gas stations, convenience stores, smog stations, and car washes in Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and California. Currently there are 100 locations, including 41 with car wash stations, and locations featuring 20 smog stations. Most locations also have convenience stores.

Amsoil was founded in 1972 in Superior, Wisconsin, by current CEO Albert J. Amatuzio, a former pilot. Amatuzio began doing research in the 1960’s regarding synthetic oils for motors and has developed a special blend for numerous applications.

Today, the company sells a wide range of synthetic motor oils for a variety of vehicles, including motorcycles. Amsoil uses multi-level marketing to distribute its product. In addition to oil, the company also offers fuel additives and filtration systems, such as oil filters and gasoline filters.

All products are made at the Amsoil factory in Superior and shipped worldwide. The company sells its products via independent dealers, who deal directly with their customers via multi-level marketing. As of 2015, the company had approximately 315 full time employees.
