Fossil was founded as Overseas Products International by Tom Kartsotis in 1984. Kartsotis’ brother Kosta Kartsosis, had told him about the large profits possible from importing retail goods made in the Far East.
The company’s first product was fashion watches.
In 1990 Kartsotis introduced leather watches under the Fossil brand.
In 2001 Fossil acquired the Swiss watch brand Zodiac from Genender International for $4.7 million.
Today Fossil has manufacturing centers in China and Switzerland and distribution centers in Germany, the United States, and Asia.
Fossil also makes watches for brands such as Adidas, Emporio Armani, Karl Lagerfield, Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs, Burberry, DKNY, Diesel, and Armani Exchange and private-label watches for Target and Wal-Mart.
Fossil sells its watches through 470 company-owned stores as well as department stores, mass merchandisers, and specialty shops in 130 countries.
