Suja Juice was founded in San Diego, California, in 2012 by four friends, Annie Lawless, Eric Ethan, James Brennen and Jeff Church. Lawless and Ethan were upset that they could not find  GMO free, organic juice, so they decided to start their own company.

The company created and blends GMO free, certified organic juices. The company uses a procedure called HIgh Pressure Processing, which allows more juice to be squeezed from the fruit or vegetables used. Only BPA free, PETE plastic bottles are used. There are several different varieties to choose from, including vegan, kosher, gluten free, and soy free.

In 2015, Coca Cola took a 15% minority share of the company for $90 million. The objective was to sell Suja Juice through Coca Cola’s extensive distribution network. At this time, the product is sold only in the US or online.

As of 2010, the company had more than 484 locations across the US, as well as an active eCommerce site. The company did have 3 locations in Canada, but these were closed in early 2016.

The company was acquired in 2002 by the private equity firm Bear Sterns for $310 million. Annual sales were $751 million in 2010. The company went public on the NYSE in 2009 and can be found under the ticker symbol: VSI.

While the company had some quality control problems in 2007, with some products containing more than the FDA allowance of lead, these issues appear to have been resolved. In 2011, the company passed a ConsumerLab.Com testing of their women’s multi-vitamin, which passed the USFDA standards.

The company is a subsidiary of NBYT, who manufactures and sells vitamins and supplement under the Puritan’s Pride, Vitamin World, and Holland & Barrett labels. Vitamin World also sells Herbal Authority and Precision Engineered brands. While Vitamin World used to be considered a discount store, new pricing policies implemented in 2007 has now put it in the slightly more expensive bracket. While the company has offered a regular buyer discount card, many customers were very unhappy with this dramatic increase in prices.

While some customers have been upset, others were pleased by the upgraded bottles, labeling, and remodeling of store locations. Internal restructuring and profit margins appear to have made up for lost customers.
