Boise-Payette Lumber Company was established in 1913 from the merger of Payette Lumber & Manufacturing Company and Barber Lumber.

EchoStar Corporation was founded in 1980 by Charles Ergen as a distributor of TV systems. In 1987 the company applied for a DBS (direct broadcast satellite) license with the Federal Communications Commission and was granted access to an orbital slot.

In 1995 EchoStar launched its first satellite, EchoStar 1. The next year the company established Dish Network to market its home satellite TV system.  In 2008 Dish Network was separated from the rest of the business and a split in shares created two companies.

The company soon began to diversify by concentrating on internal research and development and strategically acquiring new companies.

DynCorp International traces its roots to two companies formed in 1946: Land-Air Inc., an aircraft maintenance company, and California Eastern Airways, an air-freight company.
