Schnucks Supermarket was founded in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1939 by Todd Schnuck. The company grew rapidly and opened its first large store operation in 1947. By 1952, the company had opened a second location. The store symbol of a solider wasn’t added until 1968.

Today, Schnucks Supermarkets has more than 100 locations in 5 midwestern states. The company had annual revenue in 2011 of $206 billion. Schnucks is one of the largest privately owned supermarket chains in America.

In 2002, the company acquired 12 Seessel’s stores from Albertson’s. These stores were later sold to Kroger in 2011.

Schnucks announced in 2012 that the company had experienced a “system compromise” and that possibly as many as 2.4 million debit and credit card numbers were stolen. The problem has since been resolved, according to the CEO.

The company acquired 19 Shop N Save stores in the St. Louis area and in early November of 2018, began to rename and remodel these stores.

The French Laundry Corporate Office

The French Laundry has a long history that dates back to 1880 when it was used as a saloon. The building itself is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In the 1920’s, the building was used as a French steam laundry, which is the name that has remained with the building ever since.

Today, The French Laundry belongs to the Thomas Keller Group of restaurants, who purchased it in 1994. It has been rated as Best Restaurant in the World in 2003 and 2004 in the Restaurant Magazine list of Top 50 Restaurants of the World. It has also been listed by Anthony Bourdain as “the best restaurant in the world period.”

The restaurant serves two, 9 course tasting menus each day. No main ingredient is used more than once. Special holiday dishes are offered and reservations can only be made 30 days in advance. No walk-ins are allowed.

The Sharper Image was founded in 1977 by Richard Thalheimer, as a means of selling jogging watches. The company is an American brand, which features consumer electronics and high tech gadgets, such as hoverboards, via catalogs and an eCommerce site.

The company filed for bankruptcy in 2008 after a stock drop that caused them to be removed from the NASDAQ. The name Sharper Image was purchased via a joint venture from several companies, including Hilco Consumer Capital, Infinity Lifestyle Brands, Gordon Brothers and Bluestar Alliance. In June of 2014, Camelot Venture Group acquired the rights to the Sharper Image brand.

Hansen’s Clothing Corporate Office

Hansen’s Clothing was founded in 1901 by Ole Hansen, who bought out his partners to own this men’s clothing store. The company is still in the family, with Ole’s grandson Duane acting as CEO.

The company operates a large eCommerce site and men’s clothing store in Spencer, Iowa. Hansen’s Clothing also owns the dry cleaning and alteration shop next door. The company features brand name men’s clothing, including Robert Talbott shirts and ties, Bill’s Khakis, and Pendelton jackets.

While the CEO was reluctant to open an eCommerce site, it has proved to be his biggest sales generator to date. The company offers free hemming of pants and same day shipping in most instances. The eCommerce site also offers clearance items.

Kay Jewelers Corporate Office

Kay Jewelers was founded in 1910 by Henry Shaw in Akron, Ohio. The company is a subsidiary of Sterling Jewelers, which is owned by Signet Jewelers. The company offers fine jewelry, with their specialty being diamond wedding and engagement rings.

Kay Jewelers, along with the other Sterling Jeweler names such as Marks & Morgan, and Belden, is the second biggest jewelry seller in the US. The company offers a wide range of insurance and cleaning plans on almost all jewelry that is sold.

Sterling Jewelers, along Kay Jewelers, were accused in an online story, published May of 2016, which stated that customers discovered that their diamonds and other gemstones were removed and replaced with cheaper quality stones when their items were left for cleaning or repair. The company denies these allegations.

In response, the company has stepped up its store promotions and is offering bigger discounts to attract new customers in hopes of bolstering the parent company’s sagging stock.

One of Signet’s subsidiaries, Sterling, was accused in 2017 of gender discrimination. The CEO retired for “health reasons.” There are at least 2 class action lawsuits claiming gender discrimination that are pending.

In May 2019, the Consumer Protection Bureau announced an $11 million settlement with Signet/Kay Jewelers after receiving complaints that customers were signed up for credit cards that they did not authorize.

A law enforcement officer was denied entry into a Kay Jewelers location because of his service weapon. After the story went viral on social media, the company quickly issued an apology and stated that its “no weapon” policy should not have been applied to a uniformed police officer.

In December 2022, the current CEO, Gina Drosos, was credited for breathing new life back into the company.
