Southern States Cooperative Corporate Office

Southern States Cooperative was originally founded as Virginia Seed Service, a conglomeration of 150 Virginia farmers to help distribute seeds, farm equipment, and fertilizer. This cooperative allowed Virginia farmers to receive and investigate better quality seeds.

Today, the company is an agricultural powerhouse, with more than 200,000 members and more than 1,200 locations in 23 states. The company sells almost everything for the homeowner and farmer, including animal feed and fertilizer; seed processing; grain marketing; equine health; diesel, propane, and home-heating services; wholesale farm supplies; financing; and even bib overalls.

Southern States continues to encourage farmers and is looking towards technology. In late 2014, the company began enlisting the help and technology of Real-Time Kinematic (RTK), one of the newest high-tech tools to allow satellite information from GPS networks to guide field equipment with higher rates of accuracy.

The company is one of America’s largest fastener distributors with approximately 108 employees and more than 1,200 regular customers.

Wurth Group acquired the company from the family of founder Fletcher Yeilding in April of 2016 for an undisclosed sum. All managers and employees were guaranteed their jobs at the company in the sales contract.
