Unified Grocers Corporate Office

Unified Grocers was founded by the 1999 merger of United Grocers of Oregon and Certified Grocers of California. The new company was named Unified Western Grocers and was a $3 billion wholesale grocery cooperative.

In 2007 the company acquired Associated Grocers, a cooperative based in Seattle with $1 billion in sales.

Today Unified Grocers is the largest wholesale grocery distributor in the Western United States and serves 3,000 independent grocers, major grocery chains, and cash and carry outlets.

The cooperative operates distribution centers for its 390 member and non-member stores which stock 100,000 items.

TravelCenters of America (TA) bought Union 76,a chain of national truck stops, in 1997. The company closed some locations and renamed others under its own brand name.

In 1998 the company acquired 19 Burns Bros Travel Stops.

In 2007 TravelCenters of America bought out rival Petro Stopping Centers. Afterwards TA continued using both the T/A and Petro brands.

Today the company has a network of 250 interstate highway travel centers in more than 40 states and Canada.

The locations operating under the TCA and Petro names have fuel, fast food, sit-down restaurants, convenience stores, and lodging. Some locations also offer “trucker-only” services such as shower facilities, laundry, TV rooms, and truck repair.

TravelCenters of America trades publicly on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol TA, is #329 in the Fortune 500, has 20,259 employees, and had $6.052 billion in revenue in 2017.

Despite the coronavirus crisis, the company saw favorable revenue in the third quarter of 2020. 

In February 2023, BP (British Petroleum) acquired TravelCenters of America for an estimated  $1.3 billion.

Milton Hershey opened a candy store in 1873, which failed six years later. His next venture was the Lancaster Caramel Company which pioneered the use of fresh milk in caramels.

In 1900 Hershey saw chocolate-making machines for the first time. He sold his caramel company and began to concentrate on manufacturing chocolate.

In 1903 Hershey began the construction of a chocolate factory in his hometown of Derry Church, Pennsylvania. Derry Church later became known as Hershey, Pennsylvania.

In 1907 the company introduced a new candy, the Hershey’s Kiss.  Mr Goodbar followed in 1925, Hershey’s Syrup in 1926, semi-sweet chocolate chips in 1928, and Krackel bars in 1938.

Today Hershey’s is a global leader and North America’s top chocolate producer. The company’s most well-known products include Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Kit Kat wafer bar, Twizzler’s licorice, and Mound’s candy bar.

Despite the coronavirus, Hershey had tremendous revenue in 2020 and plans on paying a stock dividend of $0.80 per share on December 15, 2020.
