The company was founded in 2014 by current President and COO Johnson Cook and CEO Timothy Sheehan.

Greenlight Educational Savings Account for Kids, founded in 2018, allows parents to incentivize saving through parent-paid interest.  Through the app, kids can set savings goals for specific purposes which will also earn the parent-paid interest. 

For $5 per month, the company will issue up to 5 debit cards to family members.

Greenlight claims it has 4.5 million paid users as of October 2021.

In September 2021, the company’s valuation nearly doubled to $2.3 billion after raising another $260 million in Series D funding.

In October 2021, Nilson reported that the Upgrade.Com Visa card was the fastest-growing Visa card in the US.

Upgrade has raised $200 million in equity funding since and made over $3 billion in loans since its launch in 2017.

In June 2020, Upgrade received a $1 billion valuation in a Series D equity round led by Santander Group.

Upgrade stated in October of 2021 that the company was introducing a new payment plan that allowed customers to pay for purchases in 4 monthly installments and not be charged any interest or other fees.

Immigrant brothers from Mexico, Bert and Roy Sosa, were attending college when they realized that many of their friends were unable to purchase items online because they had no credit cards or bank accounts. Using their pooled money of $750, they founded Netspend in 1999.

Netspend visa card While the Sosa’s originally planned to sell their prepaid cards to students, they quickly realized that they could reach a much larger base by offering them online to anyone without a bank account, credit card, or those who don’t want to deal with those institutions but need another option to purchase items besides cash.

The company offers a prepaid Visa or Mastercard, which requires a small fee to open the account and charges a fee each time it is used. Netspend recently partnered with Family Dollar and 7-Eleven to sell their cards in their stores.

Netspend was forced to refund more than $13 million in fees after the FTC filed charges claiming that the company withheld funds that caused some consumers severe financial difficulties. 

In October 2018, the company experienced a technical issue that prevented an unknown number of cardholders from accessing their accounts or the ability to withdraw cash. 

In October 2020, the parent company Global Payments stated that the company was considering selling off NetSpend. 

Some Netspend users are unhappy with the service and they move their money to PayPal instead.

Headquarters for Netspend will remain in Austin, Texas.
