LegalShield Corporate Office

LegalShield develops and markets prepaid legal service plans through its network of attorneys in the United States and Canada.

In 1969 Harland C. Stonecipher was involved in an automobile accident and the subsequent lawsuit depleted his savings. This situation inspired him to create The Sportsman’s Motor Club, the predecessor to Pre-Paid Legal, which changed its name to LegalShield in 2011.

In 1984 Pre-Paid Legal went public, trading on the NASDAQ. In 1989 it moved to the American Stock Exchange, and then to the New York Stock Exchange in 1999.

The company was taken private in 2011 when it was acquired by MidOcean Partners.

Today LegalShield offers membership plans which are similar to insurance. The plans offer IRS audit protection, traffic violation defense, and will preparation. Members gain access to an independent network of attorneys.

The company also provides free final will and testaments for members. 

LegalShield has 1.5 million members.

Legalshield maintains a corporate office in Ada, Oklahoma.

The Pep Boys: Manny, Moe & Jack is commonly branded as Pep Boys. The company sells brand name and private label auto parts and provides automotive services.

Pep Boys was founded when Emanuel “Manny” Rosenfeld, Maurice “Moe” Strauss, Graham “Jack” Jackson, and Moe Radavitz pooled $800 together to open an auto parts store in 1921.

They named the store Pep Auto Supplies after Pep Valve grinding compound that they sold in the store.

In the early 1930’s Pep Boys had 40 stores in Philadelphia and had expanded to the West Coast with a store opened by Manny’s brother Maury.

Today Pep Boys operates 568 Supercenters, 225 Service and Tire Centers, 6 Pep Express stores and 8,300 service bays in 35 states and Puerto Rico.

Pep Boys is a member of the S&P 600, is #928 on the Fortune 1000, has 13,874 employees, and had $2.07 billion in revenue in 2013.

In 2015, Pep Boys was acquired by Icahn Enterprises and operates as a subsidiary.

In November 2018, the company announced that they were introducing a program where customers could purchase tires from Amazon and have them delivered to Pep Boys for installation.

The company pulled advertising from Facebook after discovering that Cambridge Analytica had breached the personal information of Facebook users.

In September 2019, the company was fined $3.7 million for dumping hazardous waste into regular trash bins designed for landfills. 

In September 2020, the company announced their top technicans of the year.

Redbox Automated Retail LLC was founded in 2002 when McDonald’s Corporation put four automated grocery kiosks selling milk, eggs, and other necessities as well as 11 DVD rental kiosks in a Washington, DC, metropolitan area.

The company withdrew the grocery kiosks within a year, but the DVD rental kiosks were a success.

In 2005 Coinstar bought 47% of the company for $32 million.

In 2008 Coinstar exercised an option to increase its ownership share from 47% to 51%.

In 2009 Cointsar bought out McDonald’s and other shareholders for $170 million to become sole owners of the company.

Redbox rents DVD and Blu-ray discs as well as video games through its distinctive red kiosks. Movies are $1.20 per night and video games cost $2.

RedBox launched its online ad-supported streaming service in February 2020. 

In August 2023, the company announced it was expanding its perks program to include its video-on-demand platform. 

Redbox is a fast-growing business with 43,700 kiosks across North America. Redbox has 47.8% of the market share for the physical rental market. The company’s biggest competitors are Blockbuster, Netflix, and GameFly.
