Vermont Country Store Corporate Office

Vermont Country Store opened in Weston, Vermont, in 1946 by Vrest and Mildred Orton. The company is still owned by the Orton family. The original store was a type of general merchandise store, with a holiday catalog mailed out to local customers. The first catalog had 12 pages and featured 36 items. By 1948, there was also a spring and summer time catalog offered to customers.

Today, the company has two locations, and an online store. After being featured in an edition of The Saturday Evening Post, the company gained national attention. The second location, in Rockingham, Vermont, features an old time mill, a mill pond, and a restored covered bridge. The company opened a restaurant, The Bryant House, next door to the original location in 1960.

Chester’s Hamburgers was founded in 1986 on Fredericksburg Road, San Antonio, Texas. The company wanted to create a fast food style restaurant that didn’t taste like fast food. The company makes all their food items from scratch each day. The hamburgers are always 1/3 of a pound, fresh, not frozen, and shakes are made from real ice cream.

What makes Chester’s Hamburgers different are the poppy seed hamburger buns, which are also baked from scratch. In addition to the usual hamburgers, fries, and shakes, the company offers chicken wings and salads. From one location, the company has grown to 4 restaurants, all in the greater San Antonio area.

The company was recently featured on many news programs in early September of 2016 due to an altercation between a racist white couple and a black teenage customer. Neither were employees of the restaurant chain.

Bookstores list their inventory on Alibris, which in turn offers them on their website, as well as business to business partners such as Barnes and Noble and Books A Million. The company offers a massive selection of out of print books, used books, rare books, even music and movies on DVD’s. Customers can both buy and sell books, with prices charged for selling books being based on the value of the item.

In August 2020, Clark.com listed Alibiris as one of the cheapest places online to purchase books.

In 2013, the company had $100 million in revenue, as well as 120 full time employees. Alibris is also a charter member of Google eBooks service as of December of 2010. The company began its own blog, with book recommendations, in 2014.
