Terrible Herbst Oil Company Corporate Office

Terrible Herbst Oil Company, known simply as Terrible Herbst, was founded in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 1959 by Jerry Herbst. His father, Ed,  owned a gas station in Chicago, Illinois, in the late 1930’s. The company claims that Ed invented the click off nozzle for gas pumps, which allowed Ed to pump more gas since there was no need to sit with each car. His competitors complained that “This terrible Herbst is going to put us out of business.” Jerry found the name amusing and decided to name his company after his father’s moniker.

The company owns a chain of gas stations, convenience stores, smog stations, and car washes in Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and California. Currently there are 100 locations, including 41 with car wash stations, and locations featuring 20 smog stations. Most locations also have convenience stores.

In February 2020, the Moapa Town Advisory Board, or MTBA, approved a zoning request from the Herbst family for a convenience store and gas station.

In 2019, the company added EV (Electric Vehicle) charging stations to all their Las Vegas, Nevada, locations.

Terrible Herbst Oil Company is still run by the Herbst family, Tim, Troy, and Ed, with headquarters in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Circle K Corporate Office

Circle K was founded in El Paso, Texas, in 1951 when Fred Hervey purchased three “Kay’s” food stores. He simply put a circle around the letter “K” and left it at that. The company went through numerous acquisitions over the years and today belongs to Canadian firm Alimentation Couche-Tard.

Today, the company has more than 8,000 locations in 10 countries, many of them franchises. The company operates a chain of convenience stores with many offering gasoline, propane refueling, and bill paying services.

The company is still expanding, with the first location in Costa Rica opening in 2015, and stores in Canada and Scandanavia being rebranded with the Circle K logo.

7 Eleven Corporate Office

7-eleven logo

7 Eleven was founded in 1927 in Dallas, Texas, when John Jefferson Green, an employee of the Southland Ice Company, began selling milk, eggs, and bread, from an improvised storefront in front of one of the company’s ice houses.

The manager of the ice plant, Joe C. Thompson, recognized the potential of this idea as the ice preserved the items and allowed people to buy these goods close to home. He eventually bought the Southland Ice Company and opened several stores selling convenience items.

7-eleven store front

In 1946 the name of the company was changed to 7 Eleven to reflect the stores’ new opening hours, from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.

In 1952 the company opened its’ 100th store.

In 1964 7 Eleven began implementing 24-hour schedules in its stores.

7-11 gas station

After a management buyout in 1987 and several changes in ownership, the company’s largest franchisee Ito-Yokado rescued the company from bankruptcy in 1998 and bought it outright in 2005.

In mid-2018, the company changed their contract terms with franchisors, forcing them to carry certain products and charging set prices for them. This has created tension as many franchisors are unhappy with the new terms.

Today 7 Eleven is the world’s largest operator, franchisor, and licensor of convenience stores, with more than 50,000 outlets. 7 Eleven operates in Japan, the United States, Thailand, Indonesia, Canada, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Singapore.

QuikTrip Corporate Office

Chester Cadieux opened the first QuikTrip in Tulsa in 1958 with a $16,000 loan. The first QuikTrip stocked limited groceries and charged a high price for the convenience.

QuikTrip was successful and Cadieux quickly reached and passed his goal of opening 10 more stores in the Tulsa area. In 1971 QuikTrip began to sell self-service gasoline.

In 1980 QuikTrip introduced its own private label of gasoline, Redline. At the same time, the company began to introduce larger stores in high-traffic areas and canopies over the self-service gas pumps to protect customers from the wind and rain.

In the mid-1980s QuikTrip expanded to St Louis and Atlanta, and to Dallas-Fort Worth in Phoenix in 2000.

Starting in the 1990s, the company faced increasing competition from oil companies, who began to add convenience stores to their gas stations. One example is the Star Markets at Texaco stations. This competition eventually led to a decrease in the price of gasoline in 1993, which reduced the profit margin on gasoline but garnered volume sales for the company.

Today QuikTrip has more than 900 stores in the Midwest and the Southern United States. The company has 13,000 employees and had $9.16 billion in revenue in 2017.

While QuikTrip has 5 locations in the greater Illinois area, the company is expanding even further by remodeling old Kmart stores into QuikTrip stores in 2022.

QuikTrip sponsored a mobile app raffle to increase usage between September 2022 and the end of October that same year.

QuikTrip maintains a corporate office in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Speedway Corporate Office

sw 1

Speedway is a wholly owned subsidiary of Marathon Petroleum.

Speedway began as Speedway 79, a Michigan based gas station chain.

In 1959, the company was purchased by the Ohio Oil Company (now Marathon) and all stations were converted to Marathon brand.

Speedway and SuperAmerica were combined in 1998 when Marathon and Ashland merged.

In 2003, the company launched the Speedy Rewards program.sw 3

In 2011, Marathon sold SuperAmerica.  The two chains are now unrelated.

In 2012, the company acquired GasAmerica and all 88 of their stations in Ohio and Indiana.

In 2014, the company acquired Hess Corporation for $2.6 billion, adding an additional 1,342 locations to Speedway. Most of the Hess locations are being changed to the Speedway brand. sw 5

Today, there are nearly 3,000 Speedway gas stations in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Wisconsin, making it the second largest chain of gas stations/convenience stores in the US.

Speedway is now owned by 7-11, who acquired the chain in 2021 and immediately cut jobs

In a classic scam, consumers should be aware that Speedway is not selling $500 gas cards for $1.98.
