Social Finance, Inc., more commonly known as SoFi, is an American financial services provider offering refinancing for student loans, personal loans, and mortgages.

sofi ad SoFi was founded in 2011 by Mike Cagney, Dan Macklin, James Finnigan, and Ian Brady, four students who met at the Standford Graduate School of Business. These friends hoped to create a company that could provide more affordable options for those taking on debt to fund their education.

In May 2016, the company became the first startup online lender to receive a triple-A rating from Moody’s.

Also in 2016, SoFi launched SoFi at Work, an employee benefit program to reduce student debt and build financial wellness, and announced it has more than 600 corporate partners.

On September 11, 2017, Chief Executive Mike Cagney announced he would resign by the end of the year due to allegations of sexual harassment and skirting risk and compliance controls.

Sofi corporate office buildingOn October 29, 2018, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) entered into a proposed Consent Order with Social Finance (SoFi). File No. 162 3197.

The FTC alleges that since at least April of 2016 the company made false statements about loan refinancing savings in television, print and internet advertisements. The FTC also alleges that the average savings SoFi advertised inflated the actual savings, sometimes even doubling it, by excluding large categories of consumers.

In addition to the misleading advertising, the FTC alleges that SoFi misrepresented when consumers would actually pay more under certain refinancing plans. Consumers who visited SoFi’s website and were pre-approved for a loan were often directed to a webpage that displayed the loan options for which they prequalified. The FTC alleges that the web page misrepresented the loan options for which consumers would pay more on a monthly basis or over the lifetime of the loan by falsely stating that consumer’s lifetime or monthly savings would be 0.00.

SoFi, neither admits nor denies any of the allegations. As part of the proposed settlement with the FTC, SoFi is prohibited from misrepresenting to consumers how much money consumers will save or have saved using SoFi’s products and from making any claims about any such savings unless they are backed up with reliable evidence.

The corporate office for SoFi is located in San Francisco, California.

While the company still operates a website where consumers report gas prices and availability, registered GasBuddy members are encouraged to input gas price data, with the incentive to earn points that allow them to obtain electronic tickets for entry towards a daily drawing for a $100 prepaid gas card. The website offers additional features such as a fuel logbook, which allows users to record fuel purchases, odometer miles, and fuel usage.gasbuddy card

In March 2013, UCG acquired GasBuddy for an undisclosed amount. Initially available only in the US and Canada, the company expanded to include Australia in 2016.

GasBuddy also noted which gas station brands tended to have the cleanest restrooms in each state, as reported by consumers in May 2019.

SoulCycle Corporate Office

SoulCycle building front

Ruth Zukerman began teaching spin classes in 1996. She introduced her friends, Elizabeth Cutler and Julie Rice, to the classes and to one another. This trio of friends decided to open their own gym featuring nothing but spin classes. Pooling their cash, their first gym was on the Upper Westside of Manhattan, New York.

SoulCycle logo on bicycle Villency Design Group designed the SoulCycle stationary bicycle using a “split seat” to relieve the discomfort caused by conventional bike seats. Equinox Fitness, a competing cycling gym, acquired a majority stake in the company in 2011.

Zukerman left the company in 2009, with Rice and Cutler selling their shares to Equinox in 2016 and stepping down from the company. The company has plans to go public but these plans appear to be stalled as of this time.

SoulCycle lit sign SoulCycle has more than 100 locations in 15 US states, Canada, and plans to open a new location in London in 2019. The company also launched its own channel on Sirius XM and Pandora, playing the music they use during the various spin classes.

Soulcycle logo on bicycle 2 In August 2019, Related Companies, owner of Equinox and SoulCycle, hosted a fundraiser for Donald Trump’s reelection, leaving many cyclists outraged and calling for a boycott. In response, the company immediately made a plan for “free rides” to raise money for the charity of the instructor’s choice.  Numerous other cycling gyms and gyms offering cycling classes, such as Hollywood Fitness Studios and Town Sports International Gym, offered free classes and discount memberships for those who want to boycott SoulCycle and Equinox.

To turn things around, the company put a new CEO in place in December 2020.

The corporate office for SoulCycle remains in New York City, New York.
