Neutrogena was founded as small company called Natone in 1930 by Emanuel Stolaroff. This Swedish company began expanding into retail markets until Stolaroff met a chemist named Edmond Fromont, who bought the rights to this mild, clear soap which kept complexions clear and did not dry the skin. The name change came in 1997 when the son in law of Stolaroff became president of the company in 1967.

Today, Neutrogena is owned by Johnson & Johnson, who purchased the company in 1994 for $924 million. The company makes soaps and creams which either fight wrinkles or fight acne, as well as a line of cosmetics, sunscreens, hair products, and items for the bath.

Neutrogena products are considered to be premium products that are in high demand in more than 70 countries including Canada, the UK, India, and South Korea. The company has headquarters in Los Angeles, California.

This shift to cookware occurred by accident when Ulam was making a pan for his own kitchen and discovered that his pan worked better than any other item he had purchased. Bloomingdale’s picked up the brand and began selling it in 1973.

Today, All-Clad is one of the most sought after names in cookware and kitchen items. The company is unique in that it uses a technology called “roll bonding” to make its pots and pans. Tastefully Simple is a multi-level marketing company which focuses on gifts and food. Products are sold by sales associates at home “parties” where foods can be sampled or gift items inspected before purchase.

The company currently has more than 24,000 sales associates, with approximately 300 of these working at company headquarters in Alexandria, Minnesota. In 2001, the company was listed on the Inc. 5000 list of America’s Fastest Growing Companies, and in 2005 the company was inducted into the Inc. Hall of Fame.

Lehman’s Hardware and Appliances, today, simply called Lehman’s, was founded in 1955 by Jay Lehman. His idea was to sell non-electrical and other types of old fashioned tools and hardware to the Amish community in Ohio. Business was nothing more than average until the oil embargo of 1973, when everyone began looking for ways to beat the energy crisis.

Today, Lehman’s specializes in tools and survival gear for environmentalists, survival buffs, Preppers, and those who prefer “off the grid” living. The Amish community used to make up 95% of company sales, today, they account for only about 5% of annual revenue. The company remodeled the store front, using Amish workers, to restore it to its original 1955 facade, although the store has doubled in size over the past decade.

The store is a popular tourist attraction as well, with many people believing that it is a type of museum, when in fact, every item in the store is for sale and is fully functional.

Blistex was founded in 1947 and has headquarters in Oak Brook, Illinois. The company makes lip care products, including wrinkle reducing, flavored lip balms, moisturizing and healing lip balms, as well as herbal lip care products.

The company also offers other products including Stridex, Kank-A, and Odor-Eaters through other divisions. Blistex is one of the top 3 lip care product companies in the US and is still family owned. Other competitors are Burt’s Bees and Chapstick brands.

The company has suffered from rumors that they are going to discontinue their long time cherry flavored lip balms, but company officials state that this rumor rears its head now and again and that there is “zero chance” that the company will discontinue their #1 flavor.
