Madewell Corporate Office

Madewell was founded in 1937 by Russian immigrant Julius Kivowitz. The company originally made workwear for men, such as overall, jeans, and pants for fishermen. Today, the company is owned by J. Crew and makes fashionable clothing for women.

The company continued to make workwear items for decades until the last American factory closed in 1989. Mickey Drexler, the former CEO of J. Crew, purchased the rights to the name and sold it to J. Crew in 2006. The company moved the brand away from work clothing to fashion clothing. Currently, J. Crew is a struggling brand, while Madewell is quite popular.

Madewell offers denim jeans, jackets and other denim items, dresses, shirts and tops, chambray, sweaters, tees, pants and shorts, jackets and outerwear, skirts, sleepwear, swimming wear, shoes and boots, bags, and jewelry.

ThredUp and Madewell have partnered to open stores that offer second-hand, quality clothing items in September 2021.

The first ThredUp and Madewell store opened in Brooklyn, New York, in late September 2021.

Becker Furniture World was founded in 1978 in Becker, Minnesota. The company began with one small 500 square foot storefront. The Huseby’s made furniture in the back room and sold to other stores in order to stay afloat in the beginning.

Today, the company has more than 8 locations and began an aggressive expansion program in 2010. The company remodeled their 250,000 square foot flagship store while opening their new mattress and bedding stores, Becker Mattress.

84 Lumber Corporate Office

84 Lumber was founded by Joe Hardy in 1956. The name comes from the town called Eighty Four, in Pennsylvania, where the company maintains its headquarters.

Today, the company has more than 310 locations in 30 states. Plans for expanding the business have been made, but exactly where new locations would be placed has not been made public. In addition to lumber, the company also carries doors, gardening supplies, and garage doors. Installation centers are available at almost every location.

The company was hit hard by the recession in 2008. From a maximum of 400 locations, owners closed half of their stores, as well as limiting family spending, and laying off employees. The company survived without filing for bankruptcy. In 2015, the company posted annual revenue of $2.5 billion.

In August 2023, 84 Lumber was named for the fourth consecutive year in the Inc. 5000 list of Fastest Growing Companies in the US.

NewTown Hardware House Corporate Office

Newtown Hardware House was built in 1869 at 106 State Street. The building next door at 108 State Street was a dry goods store. Both stores were purchased and combined into Newtown Hardware House in 1908.

While an arson fire destroyed the store in 1899, it was rebuilt in the same place it stands today. Newtown Hardware House has been in operation since 1869 and is the oldest store in Pennsylvania. The company is just as famous for its facade and history as it is for the hardware, paint, and other items it sells within the 5,000 square foot business.

Newtown Hardware House was sold to William Newell in 2012. The corporate office still stands at the same address on State Street, where it has for more than 130 years.

Lulus.Com Corporate Office

Lulus was founded in 1996 by mother and daughter team Debra Cannon and Colleen Winter. The pair opened a small clothing store, then took over a shoe store next door. The shoe store did not survive, but it eventually morphed into Lulus.Com, an online clothing store.

The company still maintains their storefront, but it’s the eCommerce site that really thrives. With more than 1 million registered customers, the company shipped almost a quarter million orders in 2010 and a half a million orders around the world in 2013. The storefront continues to expand as other businesses close but the online store continues to occupy most of the 100 employees time.
