Vonage was founded by Jeff Pulver as Min-X.com in New York. Vonage went public in 2006. The IPO was clumsily handled with respects to the company’s original (pre-IPO) investors and resulted in a class-action lawsuit.

Vonage’s name is a play on its moto, “Voice-Over-Net-AGE.”

Originally the company offered its subscription surface in the United States only, then expanded to Canada in 2004, and the U.K. in 2005.

Windstream Communications was founded in 2000 to take over the assets that Verizon was selling flowing its acquisition of GTE Southwest.

The company went public in 2005, trading on the NASDAQ.

In 2006 Valor acquired the telephone operations of Alltel. Following this acquisition, the company was renamed Windstream.

From 2007 to 2011 the company acquired many smaller companies, each time expanding its presence and the area covered by its services.

Today Windstream provides communications and technology services to business and residential customers in the United States.

Windstream trades on the NASDAQ, is a member of the S&P 500, and is #414 in the Fortune 500. The company has 13,434 employees and had $5.99 billion in revenue in 2013.

United Online was formed in 2001 with the merger of NetZero and Juno. That same year, United Online began trading on the NASDAQ.

The company began to report a profit the following year in 2002.  Also in 2002, United Online acquired Bluelight.com from Kmart Corporation.

In 2004 the company acquired consumer web hosting business from About.com. Also in 2004 the company acquired Classmates.com.

From 2005 to 2008 United Online acquired and created many new subsidiaries, including Netzero DSL, The Names Database, MyPoints, and FTD Group, Inc.

Today United Online operates subscription-based social networking sites, including Memory Lane, Classmates, and StayFriends. It also operates rewards membership program MyPoints as well as internet access and web hosting. In 2013 the company spun-off its largest subsidiary, floral retailer FTD.

Masaru Ibuka started an electronics shop in post World War II Tokyo. The next year, with partner Akio Morita, they founded the company Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation). The company built the first tape recorder in Japan, the Type-G. The company’s name was changed to Sony in 1958.

Today Sony Corporation is a multinational conglomerate corporation with worldwide headquarters in Tokyo.

Sony Corporation has 146,000 employees, trades on the New York Stock Exchange, and had $72.3 billion in revenue in 2012.

Sony Corporation of America (SCA) is based in New York and is the United States subsidiary of the Sony Corporation. SCA is the umbrella company under which all Sony companies operate in the U.S.

In 1983 Merrill Lynch invested $30 million to help finance the development of “the Bloomberg” computer system. By 1984 Bloomberg was selling machines to all of Merrill Lynch’s customers.

Michael Bloomberg continues to be the primary owner of Bloomberg L.P., though he had to give up his CEO position to become mayor of New York in 2001. He served as the mayor of New York until 2013.

Today Bloomberg L.P. provides economic, financial, and other information such as legal regulatory and compliance news and research. The company also has a radio station, television station, and its own financial news magazine.
