Winners History

Winners was first opened in 1982 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. At the time, it was the first and only discount clothing and shoe store in Canada.

In 1990, Winners was acquired by TJX Companies, who also own TJ Maxx stores. Since 2001, Winners has been paired with HomeSense, which offers home decor items, similar to the HomeGoods stores in the US.

In 2016, CBS investigated the “retail price” on Winner’s price tags and discovered that they were not always what they appeared to be and were misleading.

The company currently has 279 locations throughout Canada.

Winners does not sell their clothing or home decor items online.

In July 2020, the parent company issued a statement regarding COVID-19, stating that all employees would be required to wear masks until further notice but that stores would remain open.

Moda Operandi History

Founded in 2010, Moda Operandi is an online retailer and mobile phone app that allows customers to see and order items almost immediately after a fashion runway debut.

Moda Operandi hosts online trunk shows that let customers secure runway fashion months in advance by placing a 50-percent deposit.

The site also offers access to designer pieces that may never be available in retail locations.

The company began with only women’s fashion but soon launched a men’s collection as well. Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus downturn, Moda Operandi was forced to discontinue selling men’s fashion clothing.

The company states that business appears to be picking up this fall and offered a preview of fall fashion trends for 2020.

Moda Operandi also began offering home textiles and decorative items in the fall of 2020.

In early October 2020, the company warned that a cloud database malfunction may have exposed customers to phishing attempts.

Rent the Runway History

Jennifer Hyman and Jennifer Fleiss met at Harvard Business School. While discussing ideas for a new business, Rent the Runway was the one idea that appealed to both women.

The company provides designer clothing and accessories for rent. Initially strictly an online service, the company has since opened 5 brick and mortar locations in Washington, D.C., New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco.

The company also rents children’s clothing, accessories, including jewelry and handbags, and sells “essentials,” including lingerie, tights, shapewear, and cosmetics.

Rent the Runway also has the world’s largest dry-cleaning plant, which processes 2,000 clothing items every hour.

Due to the coronavirus crisis, Rent the Runway decided to close all of their brick and mortar locations and return to an e-Commerce business for the foreseeable future as of mid-August 2020.

Le Tote History

Le Tote is an online women’s clothing rental subscription service. Le Tote was founded in 2012 by Brett Northart.

In August 2019, Le Tote purchased Lord & Taylor for $100 million. Le Tote, founded in 2012, began by placing stores inside the struggling Lord & Taylor, eventually buying the company for a small amount.

Le Tote has competition from other clothing rental companies, such as Rent the Runway, however, Rent the Runway mainly focuses on the high end, event clothing, and Le Tote is more everyday or business clothing oriented.

Le Tote is especially popular for those interested in maternity wear, who believe that renting, rather than buying, maternity clothes is a smart financial move.

In late June 2020, Le Tote filed a lawsuit against Urban Outfitters, claiming that Urban Outfitters had violated a non-disclosure agreement created in 2018.

Rampage History

Larry Hansel was only 20 years old, but he already had a thriving car detailing business. What he really dreamed of doing, however, was to sell cutting edge fashion while taking a road trip at the same time.

Hansel achieved at least part of his dream, however, selling his clothing line, which he named Rampage.

In 2005, Hansel sold his business to the Iconix Group for a cool $45.9 million. Iconix also entered into a contract to continue to sell the sportswear collection Larry Hansel, LLC.
