Spanx was founded in 2000 by a former fax machine salesperson, Sara Blakely. While working in the Florida heat, Blakely was unable to find comfortable pantyhose. She realized that most companies used the same size waistband and a toe with a seam. Blakely began to design her own undergarments, including pantyhose with different waistbands, shapewear, and other undergarments.

What began as a business based out of her apartment has turned into one of the most successful undergarment companies in America. Blakely’s $5,000 investment earned $8 million in her first year. Blakely retains 100% ownership of the company. Spanx products are found in all high-end clothing retailers, including Neiman Marcus, Saks, Bloomingdales, and Bergdorf Goodman, as well as many other upscale clothing retailers, such as Macy’s.

In October 2018, Blakley hinted that she was considering taking the company public.

Forbes profiled Blakely’s company in June of 2014, where the company stated it generated more than $250 million in revenue each year, with a net profit of 20%. The company has headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, and recently replaced longtime CEO Laurie Ann Goldman, with former Nike executive, Jan Singer.

Maidenform was founded in 1922 in Bayonne, New Jersey by three seamstresses, Ida Rosenthal, her husband William, and the woman who owned the shop Ida worked at, Enid Bissett. In the roaring 20’s, flat chested women were popular. Ida and Enid rebelled against this idea and created dresses, as well as supporting undergarments.

Today, Maidenform manufactures sleepwear, bras, underwear, and shapewear. Hanesbrands purchased Maidenform in 2013 for $555 million. Maidenform operates as a subsidiary of Hanesbrands. The company focuses on the average sized women today, with Wonderbra and Playtex, which are also owned by Hanesbrands, taking over other sizes.

Bras account for 34 percent of all sales at Maidenform, with underwear almost 25 percent, sleepwear 22 percent, and shapewear 5.2 percent, according to Maidenform. Maidenform has also stated that this acquisition should help to lower the costs of their products.

Rue La La Corporate Office

Rue La La was founded in 2007 by current CEO Mark McWeeny in Boston, Massachusetts. The company is an invitation-only website that offers private sales of discounted merchandise. Each sale has a limited time window in which merchandise can be purchased.

The company offers a wide variety of items including travel discounts, designer clothing, footwear, wine, handbags, jewelry, gourmet food, and local services, such as massages and manicures. As of 2011, Rue La La operates as a subsidiary of Kynetic L.L.C.

Sometimes referred to as a “flash” site, due to the short duration in which clients can purchase items, the company recently announced plans in May of 2016 to spend as much as $3 million expanding the company, as well as hiring approximately 150 new full-time employees.

In June 2018, the company acquired Gilt for an undisclosed amount.

Shop.Com was founded in 1992 as Market America, by current CEO JR Ridinger and his wife Loren Ridinger. The company has headquarters in Greensboro, North Carolina, and employs more than 650 full time individuals.

Originally founded as a marketing site, the company offers discount merchandise from vendors on their website. The company has expanded shipping and operations to 5 other countries, including Australia, Hong Kong, and Mexico. Market America has changed their domain name to Shop.Com in 2010, as a means of expanding Market America’s cash back program that was started in 2008.

Shop.Com has been criticized for being the ultimate multi-level marketing scheme, however, with nearly half a billion dollars in sales, it seems customers are inclined to disagree.

National Stores operate under several different names including Fallas, Fallas Paredes, Factory 2 – U, CW Price, Anna’s Linens by Fallas, Conway, and Fallas Discount Stores. From one single location in downtown Los Angeles, the company has grown to more than 350 locations in 22 states and Puerto Rico.

The company recently closed its 600,000 square foot warehouse in Otay Mesa, California, to a warehouse in Perris, California, as it represents a more central location for distribution.
