Tuft and Needle Corporate Office

Tuft and Needle was founded in 2012 as an e-commerce and mattress manufacturing company by Daehee Park and John-Thomas Marino. After Marino and his wife overpaid for a mattress that they didn’t find comfortable, they spoke with friend Daehee Park about starting their own mattress company.

The pair pitched in $3K apiece to fund their startup company. By the end of 2013, the company had already generated over $1 million in sales. A brick and mortar store was experimented with by using the downstairs portion of the corporate office in Phoenix. Mattresses could be seen, inspected, and purchased by appointment only. Today, the company has 6 store locations.

By the end of 2015, the company had more than 100 employees and exceeded $100 million in revenue. Park and Marino took out a $500,000 loan in 2016 to launch a billboard campaign entitled “Mattress Stores are Greedy” By the end of 2017, the company had more than $170 million in revenue.

Serta acquired Tuft and Needle in September 2018. In November, the company paired with Amazon to sell an Amazon exclusive mattress called The Nod.

The company revealed in late 2019 that it had accidentally placed customers’ names, addresses, and phone numbers on an unsecured server that printed shipping labels. No financial information was released.

Scott Tannen and his wife Missy started Boll and Branch in January 2014. While neither one had experience in textiles, this pair wanted to create top of the line bedding products.

The Tannen’s knew that most bedding is made in sweatshops overseas, and this is something they wanted to avoid. Not having experience in textiles allowed them to start from scratch.

The company didn’t advertise for the first 18 months, but once media sites like the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune began writing and doing interviews, demand for company products has been tremendous.

Boll and Branch offer luxury, high-quality bedding, towels, and mattresses. All products are organic and are certified by Fair Trade USA.

The company was self-funded and has an estimated annual revenue of $100 million. Products are made in Kolkata, India, with the cotton being grown in Orissa, India.

In October 2016, the company introduced flannel sheets manufactured in Guimaraes, Portugal, and in 2018, a line of ethically produced down pillows.

Mattresses that the company sells aren’t the typical memory foam, but are made from wool, organic cotton, and coil springs.

In April 2020, the company announced that it was donating 10 percent from each sale to the production of mattresses and pillows for popup hospitals dealing with the coronavirus.

While the majority of the company was started with the founder’s own cash, the company received $100 million in additional startup funding in August 2019.

Casper Sleep, also known as Casper Mattress or sometimes, simply Casper, was founded in 2014 by Philip Krim, Neil Parikh, T. Luke Sherwin, Jeff Chapin, and Gabe Flateman. The company is an e-commerce business which offers mattress for people and dog beds.

The company sold more than $1 million worth of mattresses within their first 28 days. Delivery is free to the US and in 2014, the company included Canada in their free shipping area.

The mattresses offer 4 layers of different types of foam, mainly memory and polyurethane foam. In 2017, mattresses now include a silicone polymer for The Wave model, which offers superior ergonomic support. Each mattress comes with a 100 day no questions asked return policy. All returned mattresses are donated.

The company operates a chain of 95 discount furniture and mattress stores in 18 states. There are no fancy showrooms, just warehouses full of new furniture at discount prices.

Customers have a wide variety of name brands to choose from without having to pay for a fancy showroom, which makes for lower prices.

In late 2014, the company was acquired by Resolute Fund III, a private equity company managed by Jordan Company III. The terms of the sale were not disclosed. Belford and most of the staff will remain in their positions. Jordan Company states that they hope to expand the company into all 50 states within 10 years.

In 2022, American Freight opened multiple locations in several states, including Minnesota, New York, Missouri, and Virginia.

At present time, company headquarters remain in Delaware, Ohio.
