Magna International Corporate Office

Frank Stronach began making metal sun visor brackets for General Motors in 1957. From his start as a one-man operation renting a tool and die garage in Toronto has turned into an international operation with more than 169,000 employees.

The company developed an employee equity participation and profit-sharing program in 1974. By 1981, Magna had sold its aerospace and defense operations to focus on the automotive industry. It began decentralizing major systems into independent, publicly traded companies during the 1990s while expanding into Asia.

Magna began designing automotive rearview cameras for Humvees in 2005 on its production line in Detroit. It was one of the first companies to develop rearview cameras for automakers and had a 350,000 unit contract by 2007. The company has produced more than 46 million components and opened a $66.5 million plant to produce cameras and driver-assistance components.

In February 2021, the office of the governor of the state of Michigan announced that Magna plans to open a facility in the city of St. Clair to build battery enclosures for the 2022 Humvee electric pickup. The battery enclosures will be produced at GM’s facility in Detroit and Hamtramck. The new facility is expected to cost $70 million and to create over 300 jobs for the state.

In April 2021, founder Frank Stronach announced that the company was creating a 3-wheeled, one person, electric vehicle that would be able to use most bike lanes. For city traffic, Stronach believes the vehicle, called the Sarit, would be beneficial and that it will eventually change the world of cars and transportation as we know it.

The top speed for the Sarit is 20 MPH and the current price is $5,000 dollars. Stronach has not said when they expect to have the vehicle ready for sale to the public.

The US corporate office for Magna International is located in Troy, Michigan.

Shift Corporate Office

Toby Russell thinks nothing is more stressful than buying a new or even a used car. With new car buying stuck in the analog age of the 1960s, Russell and his friend George Arison set out to create a new platform.

Shift.Com was founded in 2014. The company operates an online marketplace where clients can shop for a used car or sell their car online.

Russell believes that buying or selling a car has many obstacles that using an online marketplace removes, such as women being ripped off or men feeling less than adequate because they don’t want to buy a huge truck or if they can’t buy a top of the line model.

Buyers and sellers never meet. Buyers see a car, they ask a Shift.Com employee to bring them the car so they can test drive it and look it over. If they want to buy it, the employee has a tablet with financing options or a platform is available to pay from the seller’s bank. If the client doesn’t want the car, it is returned to stock.

Clients can also get a manufacturer-style, like-new warranty. There are multiple lending options and a totally transparent price. There’s no negotiation, no haggling, and clients can do it from their driveway, work, or wherever they would like to meet.

Russell noted that during the pandemic, most people were buying new cars due to the many financing offers of zero percent interest.

In February 2023, the company announced that it would close all east coast stores that came with its merger of CarLotz. The store leases, inventory, and related assets in Richmond, VA, Charlottesville, VA, and Tampa, FL, will be assumed by a local dealership group. The stores in Midlothian, VA, Charlotte, NC, and Greensboro, NC will be closed, effective today.

Shift.Com maintains a corporate office building in San Francisco, California.

Zoox Corporate Office

Zoox is an autonomous vehicle company founded in 2014 by Tim Kentley-Klay and Jesse Levinson.

The company has created a completely new type of autonomous vehicle that is designed to operate as a taxi service. Rather than a unique vehicle, the company can retrofit older models. Zoox has applied the latest techniques in automotive, robotics and renewable energy to build a symmetrical, bi-directional battery-electric vehicle

In June 2020, Amazon purchased Zoox for $1.3 billion. Two shareholders have sued Zoox in August 2020, stating that there were better offers on the table that would have benefitted shareholders.

Even some employees of Zoox were not happy about the sale, threatening to quit.

Zoox released a video of its car in action, maneuvering through heavy downtown San Francisco traffic in April 2020.

Zoox maintains a corporate office in Foster City, California.

Lucid Motors Corporate Office

Bernard Tse, Sheaupyng Lin, & Sam Weng originally founded their electric car company as “Atieva” in 2007. After years of more intense research and design, the company decided to rebrand itself in 2016 as Lucid.

Some of the 500 employees had worked for other EV (electric vehicle) companies including Tesla and Mazda.

Peter Rawlinson, former engineer for Tesla, joined the company in 2016.

In late 2016, the company announced its plans to build a $700 million manufacturing plant in Casa Grande, Arizona. The company’s plan was to hire 2,000 persons and begin by manufacturing 20,000 cars a year, and to gradually increase production until 2020 when they hoped to build 130,000 cars each year. The factory currently has a maximum yearly capacity of 380,000 vehicles per year.

The Lucid Air, a fully electric car model, was unveiled in December 2016. The vehicle has two electric motors, the front motor having 400 horsepower and the rear motor 600 horsepower.

Lucid has an agreement with MobileEye to use their EyeQ4 chips. Each Lucid vehicle has 8 cameras and is autonomous ready, should this type of driverless mobility be approved for general use.

Lucid’s lithium-ion batteries are produced by Samsung and LG Chem.

The company has partnered with ElectrifyAmerica to use its nationwide charging network.

Lucid plans to open 8 showrooms, 5 in California, by the end of 2020.

The company maintains a corporate office in Newark, California.
