Zumba Fitness was founded in the 1990’s by choreographer and dancer Alberto “Beto” Perez in Cali, Columbia. The company offers classes, instructional DVD’s for a dance routine, including merengue and other Latin dances, designed to make physical fitness fun.
The company is now owned by Claudia Leitte, a Columbian pop singer. Classes are performed with variations around the world. Current CEO Alberto Perlman estimates that there are 14 million Zumba students in more than 186 countries. The company offers training classes fr instructors, DVD’s, shoes, athletic wear, and stickers.
Although Zumba does not charge for the use of their name, they do ask instructors to post their certificates in their classes. Headquarters are now located in Hallendale, Florida. The name “Zumba” has no real meaning, as Beto Perez admits he simply made up the name.

I’ve gone to several Zumba classes around and I feel that the way zumba instructor stand with their back towards the classes is unnerving. To me this is NOT the way to teach a class with the instructor is not facing the class. When you go into a classroom the teacher is not sitting with their back toward the class. I feel that I could have done much better exercising if I could have seen what he/she was doing. This is 3 strike against Zumba.

Hello Cynthia. I understand your frustration. Please, please note that every single instructor has his or her own style of teaching. Your class may have had a newer and novice instructor still finding their way. I have been an ZIN instructor for over 10 years and it takes practice and repetition to get comfortable in front of the class. I can assure you instructors are taught from the beginning during their certification class to practice facing the students but it comes with time. My wife and I teach in North Carolina and we don’t face the students continuously but do for most of the class. If I have a new routine for them, it’s easier for them to follow the footwork exactly as they should be stepping. I think if you give it a chance and go from class to class and even seek out different instructors, you’ll find that ONE that you really connect with and you’ll be inspired to be an instructor yourself one day. Don’t give up on Zumba. It’s for life if you let it be! Good luck! Rob Cox. Kannapolis, NC

Zumba Home Office:
I am unable to access the new Zumba track because I am not a ‘digital ‘member.
I am extremely disappointed that you have decided to discriminate against those of us who have, for various reasons, chosen not to go to a digital format. For some of us who may not have reliable or speedy internet capabilities along with those who like to have the physical DVD’s and CD’s it is an exclusionary decision which forces us to either ‘get onboard’ or be ‘out of the loop’ in regard to music, instruction, education regarding Zumba.
I have been a ZIN member since January of 2010… that has been $30 payment for 8 years and 4 months for a total of $3000 to date. That is not an insignificant amount of money, coupled with, licensing in B1, Gold, Toning, Pro Skills, Aqua, Zumbawear, participating in Zumba Fundraisers, and representing Zumba ( I believe my participants would support this) in a positive manner.
If this were not just a financial driven decision by HQ then why would those of us, who are non-digital, not have the full support and resources available to us? Why are you creating an ‘us’ and ‘them’ scenario? We have already been penalized by you not providing us with the additional warm ups and cool downs on our instructional material with our CD’s and DVD’s.
I find it unfortunate that Zumba Home Office does not feel it is important to provide ALL of their ZIN’s with the educational materials and resources to represent Zumba in the best manner possible.
You do much to enhance the lives of participants and Instructors by promoting a wonderful fitness/fun program. I would ask that you revisit your current policy and avail to ALL of us in the ZIN community equal access of information and educational opportunities so we may continue to promote a Positive and Healthy Zumba Lifestyle no matter which type of learning format we may choose.
Thank you for your time and attention. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi ,
I am Striesand Lee. I am from the Philippines but I live in Japan. I love Zumba and I got my license here in Japan. I’m a zin member. I have a little confusion about the policy of Zumba and as an Instructor. Japan Wellness Innovation is a company here handling workshops and trainings. But I was confused with their rules. I’m teaching Zumba here in Japan . Is it also possible that I could teach Zumba in my country or any country cause I already had the license and paying the membership of Zin . But i got the license here in Japan.
