MeUndies was founded in 2011 by then 25-year-o9ld Jonathan Shokrian. After purchasing some underwear while on a business trip, Shokrian was unimpressed by what was supposed to be “premium” underwear. With $400,000 in start-up funds, Shokrian decided he would change how people not only purchased underwear but also improve the quality of these undergarments.

The company operates an online subscription service that offers mostly underwear for both men and women, as well as bras. Advertised as the most comfortable underwear ever, clients can change styles every month if they wish or order more if they find a style they love.

The company first advertised on a porn site and still has what some consider to be fairly racy ads, featuring gay men and plus sized women. Shokrian admits that his products are not made in the USA, but it wasn’t for lack of trying. He searched all over Los Angeles and the country for materials and a factory but was unsuccessful.

Company headquarters are located in Los Angeles, California. Shokrian says the company opened its first brick and mortar retail location at Westfield, Century City, California in 2018.

After being laid off from his sales job in the 2008 recession, Tom Patterson decided to be/do/make something different. He remembered that many successful people today made their fortune simply by “building a better mousetrap.” Patterson thought that one of the things that annoyed him as a salesman was the “fabric gut” from his underwear. He decided to redesign men’s underwear.

He searched for the perfect fabric and had a tailor make the original 15 pairs by hand. He gave them out to friends and asked for honest feedback. Once he believed he had the perfect fabric and fit, Patterson and girlfriend/partner Erin Fujimoto moved to San Diego for manufacturing.

Today, the company sells their products at some of the finest retailers in the US, including Nordstrom, Saks, and Neiman Marcus. In just 5 years, revenue has surpassed the million dollar mark.

Patterson isn’t planning on stopping at men’s underwear but wants to continue to make improved products for men’s socks, robes, and pajamas. The company began producing women’s underwear and camisoles in early 2018.

By 2016, the company states that it had sold more than 2 million pairs of men’s underwear and had their products in more than 500 stores. The company also has an extensive e-commerce site.

The company offers shape wear for a variety of uses and needs, including postpartum, post-surgery, as well as simply looking better when dressed. Most products have a lining which is infused with aloe vera, ginkgo biloba, or marine algae for quicker healing time. In addition to shape wear, the company also offers jeans which are designed to improve the appearance of the buttocks.

Journelle was founded in 2007 by former CEO Claire Chambers. After being disappointed in the lingerie she found at even exclusive shops, she decided to create her own upscale lingerie business. The company designs and sells lingerie for women.

The company began with one store in Manhattan, New York, and has expanded to 4 locations; 3 in New York, 1 in Chicago. The company also boasts a large eCommerce store. In 2014, the company hired former Victoria Secret designer Raina-Eid. The company is known for its lacy, delicate, and beautiful lingerie. Brands include names such as CosaBella, Chantelle, and Hanky Panky. The company launched their own perfume line, Linden, in early 2013.

Bare Necessities was founded in 1998 in New Jersey by Noah Wrubel and Bill Richardson. Wrubel’s family had a store selling similar items by the same name since 1965, but Wrubel and Richardson envisioned a larger store with greater volume. Original orders were filled and customers notified via pager that they could pick up their order, however, this proved to be inefficient.

Today, Bare Necessities is the second largest online retailer of women’s swimwear, undergarments, and loungewear, right behind Victoria’s Secret. The company operates out of a 10,000 square foot warehouse and employs approximately 45 persons. The original goal was to sell 1 garment per hour. Today, the company sells, on average, 4,000 orders every 24 hours.

Bare Necessities had $66 million in annual revenue as of 2014 and ships only to the US, the Virgin Islands, Mexico, Canada, and Puerto Rico.
