Citrix Systems was founded in 1989 by Ed Iabobucci, a former IBM developer. At the time, Iabucci was offered the job of chief technical officer at Microsoft but turned it down to start his own company.
The company’s first product was Citrix MULTIUSER. This product failed and the company survived by infusions of capital from IBM, Microsoft, and venture capitalists until 1993.
In 1993 Citrix Systems purchased the product “NetWare Access Server,” developed it further, and released it as WinView. WinView was Citrix’s first successful product.
Today Citrix Systems makes network access devices and software which enable devices such as computers and smartphones to securely and remotely access applications over wireless networks so that individuals so not have to install and update software across devices.
Popular products include XenDesktop, NetScaler, CloudPlatform, and GoToMeeting.
The company trades publicly on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol CTXS, is a member of the S&P 500, is #741 in the Fortune 1000, and had $3.14 billion in revenue in 2014.
