Southwest Airlines began as Air Southwest in 1967 in Dallas, Texas. Rollin King and Herb Kelleher began the airline to provide service within Texas.
In 1971, the company changed its name to Southwest Airlines Company. The company saw heavy losses in 1971 and 1972 and had to sell one of their four aircraft.
In 1984, the company purchased their first Boeing 737 plane. In 1985, Southwest purchased Muse Air and renamed the company TransStar.
In 1992, the company acquired Morris Air.
In 1995, Southwest became the first airline to have a website.
In 2011, the company purchased AirTran Airways which added 15 additional destinations to their offerings.
