In 2001 FirstEnergy merged with GPU, Inc, parent of Jersey Central Power & Light Company, Pennsylvania Electric Company (Penelec), and Metropolitan Edison Company (Met-Ed).

Today FirstEnergy and its subsidiaries generate, transmit, and distribute electricity. Through its ten utility companies the company serves 6 million customers in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic across 67,000 square miles.

The company’s domestic power plants have a generating capacity of 18,000 MW, mostly generated by coal.

Subsidiaries trade energy commodities in deregulated US markets, electrical and mechanical contracting, and energy procurement and planning.
