FirstEnergy History

FirstEnergy was founded in 1997  when Ohio Edison acquired Centerior Energy and subsidiaries. The company is involved in the generation, transmission, and distribution of electrical energy for consumers and businesses.

The company is the largest investor owned utility in the US, serving more than 6 million customers in the states of  Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey and New York. In early 2016, the company decided to bow out of the competitive energy business and become a fully regulated company over the next 18 months.

FirstEnergy stock is traded on the NYSE under the ticker symbol:FE. Currently, the company employs more than 15,000 persons and had annual revenue in 2016 of $14.5 billion. Company headquarters remain in Akron, Ohio.

FirstEnergy History

FirstEnergy was formed in 1997 when Ohio Edison acquired Centerior Energy in a $1.6 billion stock deal.

In 2001 FirstEnergy merged with GPU, Inc, parent of Jersey Central Power & Light Company, Pennsylvania Electric Company (Penelec), and Metropolitan Edison Company (Met-Ed).

Today FirstEnergy and its subsidiaries generate, transmit, and distribute electricity. Through its ten utility companies the company serves 6 million customers in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic across 67,000 square miles.

The company’s domestic power plants have a generating capacity of 18,000 MW, mostly generated by coal.

Subsidiaries trade energy commodities in deregulated US markets, electrical and mechanical contracting, and energy procurement and planning.

FirstEnergy trades publicly on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol FE, is a member of the S&P 500, is a member of Dow Jones Utilities, is #195 in the Fortune 500, has 15,754 employees, and had $14.79 billion in revenue in 2013.
