BirchBox was founded in 2010 by two graduates of the Harvard Business School, Hayley Barna and Katia Beauchamp in New York City. The company operates an online monthly subscription service which features cosmetics and grooming products.
In July 2014, the company opened its first brick and mortar location in New York’s trendy SoHo district. By September of 2015, BirchBox had more than 1 million subscribers and 800 brand partners.
The products include skincare items, perfumes,organic-based products, and various other types of cosmetics. There are 4 to 5 sample sized products in each box, with the idea being that clients will love the product so much they will purchase the full sized version.
Hayley Barna left the company in 2015. Declining sales forced the company to lay off approximately 15% of the staff. Walgreens purchased a minority share in the company in October of 2018.
In January 2018, hedge fund Viking Global Investors purchased a majority share of the company, assuring employees that there were no plans for layoffs or job cuts.
