Ball Corporation was founded in 1880 by brothers Frank C. and Edmund B. Ball as the Wooden Jacket Can Company. The company originally made tin cans encased in wood for kerosene.
The brothers soon realized that it would be more efficient to store the kerosene in glass, and in 1882 began manufacturing glass products.
In 1884 the brothers discovered that the patent for the Mason Improved fruit jar had expired, and they could begin making the fruit jars in their factory.
The company was then renamed Ball Brothers Glass Manufacturing Company.
Today Ball Corporation produces food and beverage packaging and household goods. The company also manufactures an array of aerospace systems through its Ball Aerospace & Technologies division.
Ball Corporation trades publicly on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol BLL, is a member of the S&P 500, is #307 in the Fortune 500, has 14,500 employees, and had $8.57 billion in revenue in 2013.
