Powell’s Books was founded in 1971 by father and son team Walter and Michael Powell. Powell’s Books claims to be the largest, independently owned bookstore in the world. The company states that it buys approximately 3,000 used books every single day.

The company has 4 locations in Portland, with the largest being dubbed the “Powell’s City of Books.” The building has two floors, including a rooftop garden. Powell’s began selling and buying books online in 1993. The company remains in the family, with Michael Powell turning over control of the business to his daughter Emily in 2010.

Powell’s Books has offered free shipping on DVD’s since 2004. In 2010, the company announced that it had purchased Ann Rice’s library, a total of 7,000 books. The company is also a charter member of Google’s eBook service since December of 2010.

Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland Corporate Office

Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland was founded in 1945 by Wally Bronner in Frankenmuth, Michigan. The company is the world’s largest, year ’round Christmas tree and decoration store. The store has an alpine type of design and covers 7 acres. The store sits on another 27 acres of park like grounds. The company states that their electric bill averages about $1,250 each day.

The company has more than 2 million visitors each year, with the day after Thanksgiving having the largest crowds, with as many as 50,000 customers. In addition to the brick and mortar location, the company sells more than 3,000 items via their website. Bronner’s offers gifts and decorations from more than 70 countries.

Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland is still family owned and operated. The company is the only authorized dealer for Precious Moments Christmas themed figurines. The outside of the location is decorated with a 17 foot high Santa Claus and a 15 foot high snowman.

In December 2021, Bronner’s spokesperson said that they have had difficulty finding employees for this season.

Halloween Club Corporate Office

Halloween Club was founded in 1994 by cousins Babloo Sawhney and Jack Bhasin. After opening a department store called Aah’s, the pair noticed that there was big demand for Halloween items, not only at Halloween, but most of the year. This inspired the pair to open their own company, First Imperial Trading Company, and Halloween Club was born.

The company currently has two locations, one in La Mirada, the other in Montebello, California.

There is also an extensive online selection. Each store has thousands of costumes, masks, make up, and accessories, as well as Halloween decorations for the home. Many of the costumes are manufactured by the company and are sold under the “Straight From the Grave” label.

The name comes from the original concept of three stores in one; The Front Shop, The Back Shop, and The Barn Shop. This is why the name is called Christmas Trees Shops, rather than the singular “Shop”.
