Rivian was founded in 2009 by MIT graduate and CEO Robert Scaringe. Originally named Avera, the name was changed shortly after to Rivian. The company began focusing on autonomous, electric vehicles in 2011.
The company relocated to Liviona, Michigan, to be closer to suppliers. Rivian began working exclusively on electric, autonomous vehicles.
In 2016, it was rumored that the company was considering purchasing a manufacturing plant previously owned by Mitsubishi in Illinois. In 2017, Rivian did purchase both the plant and the contents for $16 million. This plant in Normal, Illinois, has become Rivian’s primary North American manufacturing facility.
In February 2019, Amazon announced that it was investing in the company for delivery vans, as well as Ford Motor Company, which invested $500 million.
As of late 2019, the company employed more than 1,000 persons. Rivian says it will not use franchised dealers to sell their vehicles. Rather, the company has hinted that it will instead rely on a subscription service.
The company maintains headquarters in Plymouth, Michigan.

I just watched a you tube video talking about all the things he hated about his new rivian. I have owned about 7 different brands of pickups since 1989. And used them for everything.I have a very simple solution for his main dislike Please contact me. I would love to talk with an engineer.

I move to Bloomington from Chicago south side started working at rivian july 22 was three mins late to work got wrote up!! July 26 I was late I call my supervisor to tell her I got stop by a train Iam new to Bloomington so ion know how to go around it ! Went on break and she saying I took a 30 min break when my other team mates was still on break to but they didn’t get in trouble! July 27 I had a problem wit refilling my tissues because I left my key in the car so I had to wait to go get my key to change it I thinking since I have to go around again I can refill it I got suspended that same day!! I was suspended for 28,29,30 went back to work august 2 it’s was a good day went back august 3 go firer ! This the same lady I told her everything I had going on ! Being new to Bloomington! My supervisor was the same person was gone change my time n take me to a new building that she said nobody was gone watch me and it’s lay back she was picking on me nobody trying to here where Iam coming from
