Fox’s Pizza Den Corporate Office

Fox’s Pizza Den was founded in 1971 by Jim Fox in Pitcairn, Pennsylvania. With a $500 investment, Fox sold out all pizzas made the first day within the first 6 hours of opening. The company operates a chain of pizza restaurants across the US. All of the 280 locations, found in 28 states, are franchised. The company consistently ranks in the Top 25 pizza restaurants in the world.

In 2002 Jim Fox was named by the Small Business Administration as one of the country’s top entrepreneurs. Today, however, many of the franchises have closed due to bad business practices. This has lead to the SBA discontinuing lending money for new Fox Pizza franchises.

Fox’s Pizza Den, in addition to pizza, also offers sandwiches, stomboli, Hoagies, and salads.

At a time when other restaurant and pizza chains are closing, Fox’s Pizza Den continues to add new franchises, such as in Pennslyvania, and Ohio. 

The NHL and Fox’s Pizza teamed up in late 2021 to deliver more than 1,000 pizzas to famlies in need in the Pennslyvania area.

Shakey’s Pizza was founded in Sacramento, California, in 1954 by Sherwood “Shakey” Johnson and Ed Plummer. Johnson used to play dixieland jazz piano in the restaurant most nights. The company is known not only for pizza and beer, but for its live entertainment and for the straw hats employees wear.

The company was the first pizza franchise in the US. Today, Shakey’s Pizza has more than 500 stores around the world, with approximately 60 of those in the US. The company has been sold several times over the years, most recently in 2004 to Jacmar Companies, who keep their headquarters in Alhambra, California.

Shakey’s Pizza is particularly popular in the Phillipines, with more than 150 locations. In addition to pizza, the company offers chicken, sandwiches, pasta, and desserts.

East of Chicago Pizza was founded in 1982 in Greenwich, Ohio, under the name of Greenwich Pizza. The company operates a chain of pizza and sandwich shops. The chain was purchased by a former franchisee, Tony Collins, in 2008. Current owner and CEO, Collins moved company headquarters to Lima, Ohio.

Today, the company has 75 restaurants in 8 states, most of them franchises. In a study done in 2009, the company ranked as number 41 on a list of American pizza companies.

East of Chicago Pizza uses a mobile phone app for ordering, as well as taking orders online from their eCommerce site. The company offers oven baked submarine style sandwiches, pastas, chicken wings, and more than 12 different types of pizza.

The Roaring Fork was founded in 2009 in Dallas, Texas. The company operates a chain of upscale steak restaurants in Texas and Arizona. The company specializes in wood fire grilled meats, including lamb, chicken, beef, and pork.

This restaurant chain offers private dining, as well as outdoor seating when the weather permits. Phoenix Times listed The Roaring Fork as “Best Restaurant” and the Scottsdale Times listed the company as having “Best Happy Hour” in 2011.

Happy Joe’s Pizza was founded in 1972 in Bettendorf, Iowa, by former Shakey’s Pizza manager “Happy Joe” Whitty. The company currently has 61 locations in 6 states.

The company claims to be the founder of the “Taco” pizza, which includes refried beans and taco chips. This has become the company’s best-selling pizza and trademark food item.  New pizza flavors are constantly being created, with current flavors being Sweet Chili Asian Chicken Pizza and Cesar Salad Pizza.

Happy Joe’s Pizza began franchising in the mid-1970s. The company is still family-owned, with Lawrence Whitty as CEO.

One location in Iowa City, Iowa, was completely destroyed by a tornado in 2006.

The company announced that it was ready for new growth but would focus on quality over quantity in July 2022.
