Kia is a South Korean automobile manufacturer with global headquarters in Seoul. It is South Korea’s second-largest automobile manufacturer after Hyundai.

The name Kia is derived from two Korean words which together mean “Rising out of Asia.”

History

Kia was founded in 1944 as a maker of steel tubing and bicycle parts. They later began building complete bicycles.

In 1957 they began building motorcycles, then trucks in 1962, and cars in 1974.

From 1986 to 1995 they expanded methodically and incorporated into the United States.

During the Asian financial crisis, Kia declared bankruptcy. Hyundai acquired 51% of the company. After subsequent adjustments, it now owns 32.8% of Kia.

In 2014, the company announced that it would open a new factory in Nuevo Leon, Mexico. In early 2018, CEO of the Mexico division of Kia, Horacio Chavez, stated that the factory would increase production more than 40% due to increased sales.

The company has faced harsh criticism over premature engine failure and lack of spare tires in new cars, without notifying new car customers.

Today Kia sells over 3 million vehicles per year and in 2019, has plans to enter the market in India in late 2018 or early 2019.

In January 2022, Kia announced a massive recall due to defective airbags.

In March 2022, a class action lawsuit was filed due to numerous complaints regarding excessive oil consumption.

In October 2023, Kia announced that it would use the Tesla charging system for its electric vehicles.

Kia maintains a corporate office in Irvine, California.

PayPal was launched in 2000 after the internet financial services company X.com acquired Confinity, which had started the PayPal system two months before.

PayPal is a global e-commerce company that is an alternative to traditional payment methods. It facilitates money transfers and payments through the internet. Purchases can be made through a credit card or by transferring money from a bank account.

History

PayPal charges fees based on the purchase or transfer amount, the currency or currencies used, the country of origin, country of the recipient, the payment option, or the account type.

In 2002 eBay acquired PayPal and made it a wholly-owned subsidiary.

In March 2019, Fox News warned their viewers that PayPal had sided with the far left by discriminating which accounts they would keep and which were booted.

PayPal invested $500 million in Uber and in May 2019, stated that the company would be interested in similar strategic deals

In February 2023, PayPal announced lower-than-expected 4th quarter earnings.

As of 2012, PayPal had over 100 million active accounts, in 26 currencies, with a payment volume processed of US $145 billion.

The Nissan Motor Company, Ltd. was founded in 1911 by Masujiro Hashimoto under the name Kwaishinsha Motorcar Co., Ltd.

After numerous mergers and name changes, the Nissan name was first used in the 1930s as an abbreviation used on the Tokyo stock exchange for the Nippon Sangyo, the name of the company at that time.

History

The company officially became known as the Nissan Motor Company in 1934 when the automobile sector of the company was expanded and made a subsidiary.

In 2011, Nissan was the sixth-largest automaker in the world.

In December 2018, the CEO of Nissan, Carlos Ghosn, was arrested in Tokyo, Japan, for tax evasion. A successor has yet to be named.

In 2019, the company named Makoto Uchida its new CEO.

Ex-ceo Carlos Ghosn ripped Nissan saying that it was a boring, outdated car manufacturing company.

Nissan’s television ad about its electric car, Leaf, was the most viewed car commericial ever in 2021.

Nissan markets automobiles under the names Datsun and Infiniti. Headquarters for North America is located in Franklin, Tennessee.

The company changed its name to the Toshiba Corporation in 1978.

Toshiba’s products and services include information technology, communications equipment, electric components, household appliances, medical equipment, office equipment, lighting and logistics, and power systems.

History

The company has made many important acquisitions, including I.B.M.’s point-of-sale business in 2012.

In 2010, Toshiba was the world’s fifth largest personal computer vendor, as measured by revenues. The same year, it was the fourth-largest manufacturer of semiconductors by revenues.

Lee Byung-chul founded Samsung as a small trading company in 1938 in Seoul, South Korea.

Throughout the next thirty years, Samsung diversified into several different areas, including retail, securities, insurance, textiles, and food processing.

History

In the late 1960s, it entered the electronics industry and ten years later the shipbuilding industry. These last two industries would prove to be its largest growth industries.

Samsung started to globalize in the 1990s and electronics have become its principal income source.

Samsung now has several large subsidiaries, most notably Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest information technology company, Samsung Heavy Industries, which is the world’s second-largest shipbuilder, and Samsung Engineering, which is the world’s 13th largest construction company.

Samsung had $170.65 billion in revenue in 2015, as well as employing almost 400,000 people.

The company has recently experienced severe problems with their Galaxy Note 7 mobile phones. Numerous complaints about the phone catching fire while recharging the battery caused the company to issue replacement phones. However, in early October of 2016, the company announced that it had not only stopped sending replacement phones due to continued fire issues but that they have stopped production of this popular model altogether until they resolve the issue.

No comment from the company as to when the issue might be resolved or what they plan to do with the millions of phones already sold.

The company has also received thousands of complaints regarding ice maker and freezer problems with a variety of refrigerator models. There is currently a class-action lawsuit over this matter since Samsung has been unresponsive.

Samsung headquarters in the US are located in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey.
