Redbox Automated Retail LLC was founded in 2002 when McDonald’s Corporation put four automated grocery kiosks selling milk, eggs, and other necessities as well as 11 DVD rental kiosks in a Washington, DC, metropolitan area.

The company withdrew the grocery kiosks within a year, but the DVD rental kiosks were a success.

History

In 2005 Coinstar bought 47% of the company for $32 million.

In 2008 Coinstar exercised an option to increase its ownership share from 47% to 51%.

In 2009 Cointsar bought out McDonald’s and other shareholders for $170 million to become sole owners of the company.

Redbox rents DVD and Blu-ray discs as well as video games through its distinctive red kiosks. Movies are $1.20 per night and video games cost $2.

RedBox launched its online ad-supported streaming service in February 2020.

In August 2023, the company announced it was expanding its perks program to include its video-on-demand platform.

Redbox is a fast-growing business with 43,700 kiosks across North America. Redbox has 47.8% of the market share for the physical rental market. The company’s biggest competitors are Blockbuster, Netflix, and GameFly.

History

Joe Croce and Mike Cole founded CiCi’s Pizza in 1985 serving a family-friendly buffet featuring pizza, soup, pasta, salads, and desserts.

CiCi’s Pizza expanded through franchising and still actively seeks franchising partners. Approximately 98% of all restaurants are franchises.

By 2001 the restaurant chain had 380 restaurants.

Today CiCi’s Pizza has 600 franchised and corporately-owned restaurants in 35 states. The company has a special program for veterans who wish to own a franchise. CiCi’s Patriot Program is one of the industry’s most extensive programs benefiting U.S. veterans. This program waves the franchise fee for the first restaurant and offers a 50 percent royalty fee reduction for the first full year that the restaurant is in operation. This discount applies to all qualified, honorably discharged U.S. veterans. This allows veterans an approximate savings of $58,000.

CiCi’s Pizza has been named one of the top 25 performing brands by the Wall Street Journal and a top 200 franchise concept by Franchise Today. In March 2009 Men’s Health Magazine gave CiCi’s Pizza “top marks” for providing healthy food choices among its list of “66 major chain restaurants”.

The company plans to add another 500 locations in the next 10 years through franchising. In addition to its current US restaurants, in 2010, the company announced plans to add locations internationally, possibly in Canada and Mexico.

In 2015, the company decided to change its name to simply “CiCi’s” to avoid being thought of as merely a pizza restaurant. The company wants to focus on other items in their buffet type menu, such as salads and chicken wings.

Some locations were dinged by various health department code violations including one in Tennessee and another in Texas that received 17 code violations.

Intermountain Healthcare was founded on 1975.

Originally, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints operated many of the hospitals in the region. In 1974 the church decided to donate its 15 hospitals to the intermountain community, with the provision that a not-for-profit organization would be formed to operate the hospitals.

In 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005 Intermountain Healthcare was ranked #1 among 600 evaluated integrated healthcare systems in the United States.

In 2009 Intermountain Healthcare was identified as a model in healthcare by president Barack Obama.

Today Intermountain Healthcare provides medical and hospital services in Utah and Idaho and offers integrated managed care under the insurance brand SelectHealth.
