Chess.com can trace its roots back to 1995 when it was used to sell software that taught people how to play and win at chess.

Internet entrepreneur Erik Allebest and partner Jarom (“Jay”) Severson bought the domain name and assembled a team of software developers to redevelop the site as a chess portal.

Chess.com operates a freemium-style business model: main site features are free but others are limited or unavailable in some respects until a subscription is paid.

History

Visitors to the site can play on a live chess server and correspondence-style games, called “daily chess” on the site. Players may also play against chess engines, as well as participate in what the site calls “vote chess”, in which players form teams and vote on the best move.

Additional features include tactics training, puzzle rush, chess forums, articles, videos, lessons, chess news, downloads, opening databases, groups, live broadcasts, daily puzzles, team matches, online coaching, and a database of over 2 million games.

In late April 2022, Russia banned Chess.Com from its country after Chess.com posted an editorial supporting Ukraine.

Also in April 2022, the company announced that it would host a chess-themed NFT marketplace.

Prodege, the parent company of Swagbucks, was founded in Torrance, California in 2005 by Josef Gorowitz.

The company originally partnered with search providers to build a platform for raising charitable donations. Supporters of the charities would earn money for the charities while surfing and shopping using white-labeled web browsers.

History

In 1998, the company changed its name to Career Builder.

CareerBuilder.com provides labor market information, talent management software, and other recruitment-related services. The company is owned by investment firm Apollo Global Management.

In an April 2022 interview with Forbes, Career Builders stated that they have seen a tremendous shift in workplace priorities over the past 2 years due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In October 2000, Iowa State University students Josh Carlson, Mike Seager, and Mark Fiddleke founded Chegg’s forerunner, Cheggpost, a message board for Iowa State students.

The name Chegg is a combination of the words chicken and egg and references the founders’ catch-22 feelings of being unable to obtain a job without experience while being unable to acquire experience without a job.

In December 2007, the company rebranded itself as Chegg and began to focus on renting textbooks to students from any and all colleges, not just Iowa State.

Chegg provides digital and physical textbook rentals, textbooks, online tutoring, and other student services.

As of March 2020, the company reported having 2.9 million subscribers to Chegg Services.

During the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, the controversy around Chegg and companies offering similar services escalated, as many students had to learn from home with uncensored internet access. Georgia Tech alerted students in a physics class that certain students in the class had cheated on their online final exam by using answers posted on Chegg.

Also, certain students in a chemistry class at Boston University were found to have similarly cheated on an online exam, and several students from two chemistry classes at the University of British Columbia were accused of using Chegg for cheating on exams, including using two incorrect answers that had been posted on the website.

In April 2022, Minnesota-native and college basketball superstar Paige Bueckers partnered with Chegg to address student hunger.

Citizens Bank Online

Citizen’s Bank can trace its roots back to 1828, when a group of merchants founded the High Street Bank in Providence, Rhode Island. The name was changed to Citizens in 1871.

The bank then expanded through Rhode Island, opening a total of 29 branches in that state. It established Citizens Financial Group as a holding company when the bank acquired The Greenville Trust Company in 1954.

In 1985, Citizens changed status from a mutual savings bank to a federal stock savings bank. Expansion into other states began with Massachusetts in 1986.

In May 2017, The Wall Street Journal reported that the US Department of Justice requested records and documents from numerous banks, including Citizens, regarding the Trump 2016 campaign manager Paul Manafort’s transactions.

Manafort reportedly secured a 2.7 million-dollar loan from Citizens in 2016.

In February 2018, Bloomberg News stated that Citizens’ stock price dropped 4.1 percent after U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s indictment of Manafort was released, appearing to indicate that Citizens was the “Lender B” cited as having lent 3.4 million dollars to the former campaign manager of President Trump.

Citizens Bank has agreements with multiple grocery stores and other locations to have bank branches located inside their stores, including Giant Eagle, Stop & Shop, as well as Dunkin’ Donuts.

In April 2022, Forbes gave Citizens Bank a favorable review regarding the student loan process.
