The company was founded in 2010 by two British Harvard Business School students, Will Dean and Guy Livingstone. The concept was developed by the pair as part of an annual business plan competition, where it won an honorable mention.

Tough Mudder courses features over 20 obstacles including live wires, butter-slicked monkey bars over a pit of cold water, a dumpster filled with ice water, a 8-12 wall to scale, narrow pipes and mud, and a high jump. The company emphasizes teamwork and participants must help others complete the course.
