AmerisourceBergen was formed by the 2001 merger of AmeriSource Health Corporation and Bergen Brunswig Corporation. AmeriSource and Bergen were both pharmaceutical distributors who were successful in different geographic areas. The merger gave the company national presence.

AmerisourceBergen distributes brand name and generic pharmaceuticals, OTC health care products, home health care supplies, and home health care equipment to pharmacies, physicians, clinics, and assisted-living centers.

The company has four major divisions: AmerisourceBergen Drug Corporation, AmerisourceBergen Specialty Group, AmerisourceBergen Consulting Services, and World Courier.

History

Amerisource provides about 20% of all pharmaceuticals sold and distributed in the United States and are the market leader in pharmaceutical distribution. Their revenue for 2012 was $79.49 billion.

Amerisource is the parent company of Good Neighbor Pharmacy, which is a cooperative network of 3,200 independent pharmacies. Good Neighbor Pharmacy received the highest overall score in customer satisfaction by J.D. Powers & Associates in both 2010 and 2011.

The company now has headquarters in Scottsdale, Arizona, and is the largest independent tire and wheel retailer in America. Discount Tire has a unique business model as they focus on making their employees happy first. Halle believes that an employee who is happy to be at work will naturally do a better job, which makes for happy customers. The company has a strict “promotion from within” policy.

In 2005, Discount Tire made the Guiness Book of World Records by having the longest continuously running television commercial ever. Their commercial with a small, elderly woman hurling a tire through a window has been running daily since 1975.

In early October 2020, Discount Tire opened 5 new locations in 5 states in a 4 day period.

Price Chopper Supermarkets was founded in 1932 when brothers, Bernard and William Golub opened their first supermarket. The original name was Public Service Market. The company changed the name to the current Price Chopper in 1973. In 1951, the company was one of the first supermarkets to begin giving customers S&H Green Stamps with purchases.

Today, the company has 134 locations and employs 24,000 people. Price Chopper has focused on innovative and new ideas to supermarkets in addition to the usual groceries. The company was one of the first supermarkets to offer 24 hour stores in some locations, in store pharmacies and gas stations were added over the years. In 2009, the company began to use natural gas fuel cells for power in some locations, cutting their electricity usage by at least 40 percent.

Price Chopper continues to expand and plans to open 5 more locations in New England in 2016. Revenue for the company was $3.4 billion in 2014.

The owner and current CEO of Pet Food Express, Mark Levy, was not allowed to have pets as he grew up, so he started his own dog walking business when he was 11.

History

In 1976, Levy owned a dog training business in San Francisco, California. He wanted to open a store that offered pet food, accessories, self-service pet washing stations, and dog training. Levy founded Pet Food Express in 1986. The company now has 61 stores throughout California.

The company does not sell pets from breeders but has placed more than 61,000 homeless cats and dogs to find new homes through their adoption program. Pet Food Express sells natural pet foods, and high-quality accessories, and states that they won’t sell anything they would not personally use on their pets.

Pet Food Express has inspired many other would-be pet store entrepreneurs.

Great Clips was originally founded as Super Clips in September of 1982 by Steve Lemmon and David Rubenzer, near the University of Minnesota. Lemmon and Rubenzer wanted to operate a no-frills type of hair cutting salon that would appeal to students and those who wanted a great haircut but did not want to pay for a fancy shop.

History

The company began offering franchises in late 1983. Great Clips has 3,700 locations across the U.S. and employs more than 30,000 hair stylists. The company had $1.03 billion in revenue in 2013.

Due to the coronavirus, most Great Clips locations were forced to close, causing clients to find alternative methods for haircuts. Now that most salons can reopen, patrons are not returning to their usual routine.

Great Clips is listed as #13 on the Entrepreneur list of Top Fastest Growing Franchises in America. The company offers veterans discounts off of their first store franchise fee and has third party sources to help cover start up costs, inventory, and equipment.
