Savers Inc. was founded in San Francisco in 1954 by William Ellison. Savers Inc. is a for-profit chain of second-hand stores or thrift stores that purchase, resell, and recycle items that would otherwise be thrown out. The company purchases items from nonprofit stores and resells or recycles items that cannot be sold. Some locations try to upcycle unsold items by remodeling them for a different purpose, then selling the item.

History

The company now has 330 locations and approximately 22,000 full-time employees. In the US, stores are listed as Savers, Value Village, or Savers Inc. In Canada, they are listed as Value Village or Village des Valeurs in Quebec. In Australia, stores are listed as Savers.

In 2015, the Minnesota Attorney General filed suit against Savers Inc. stating that they were misleading the public and that only a very small percentage of the money was actually going to charitable organizations. The matter has yet to be resolved.

Plow and Hearth was founded in Madison, Vermont, by Peter and Peggy Rice, along with friend Michael Burns. The company began their first catalog mailing in 1982 to 100,000 people. The catalog greatly increased sales and for four consecutive years (1986 through 1989) the company held the #1 spot as the Fastest Growing Company in America by Time Magazine.

Today, the company has 24 locations in 6 states, a multi-channeled online and catalog business, as well as several Outlet stores. Plow and Hearth remains privately owned, being purchased by Evergreen Enterprises in 2010. The company has more than 400 full time employees .

Plow and Hearth offers housewares, decorative items, outdoor and indoor furniture, along with garden accessories, solar powered lighting, and umbrellas.

Sam’s Club, founded in 1983, is a membership only, warehouse type store that is owned and operated by Walmart. The company is the 8th largest retailer in the US and is second in sales volume among warehouse/club type stores. It takes second place only to Costco, even though it has more retail locations than Costco.

History

The company has stores in 47 states, with Long Island, Vermont, and Oregon being the exceptions. There are also Sam’s Clubs in Mexico, Brazil, and China. Very much like Costco and the other warehouse stores, Sam’s Club mainly sells directly out of cartons or off pallets. Items are sold in bulk or multiple items will be taped together and sold at a discount. To buy at Sam’s Club, customers must purchase a yearly membership.

Sam’s Club began offering a Mastercard credit card in 2014, which can be used where ever Mastercard is accepted. The company has struggled against its competitor, Costco, and has laid off employees from underperforming stores from time to time.

In 2017, Sam’s Club reported annual revenue of $57 billion.

In January 2018, Walmart abruptly closed 63 Sam’s Club locations, putting approximately 11,000 people out of work. The following month, the company rolled out fewer membership choices and offered free shipping on almost everything they sell online.

The company announced in May 2019 that they would be eliminating tobacco products from some stores and increasing the minimum age for tobacco purchases to 21.

That same month, parent company Walmart announced that it would be forced to raise prices on nearly every item in the store if Trump’s tariff’s against China went into effect June 1st, 2019.

Warehouse 99 was founded in 1991 by Martin Goldman and Kenneth Haber. The company owns a chain of dollar stores in and around the Miami, Florida, area. Stores operate under the Warehouse 99, Dollar Star, and Lobo names.

Originally occupying a single warehouse, the company has grown to more than 21 stores in Florida, South and North Carolina. Co-founder and CEO Kenneth Haber has stated that he believes he can double the amount of locations within the next 5 years.

While the company has had a few complaints regarding expired foods and medicines, many of these problems appear to have been rectified. Warehouse 99 and Dollar Star offer discounted items, generally for $1, on food, pet supplies, household items, health and beauty aids, as well as toys, candles, gifts, and plastics.
