Breyers Ice Cream

Breyer’s Ice Cream was founded in 1866 by William Breyer, who sold ice cream off of his horse and buggy cart in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The business was incorporated in 1908 and sold to National Dairy Products in 1926.

Today, the company operates as a subsidiary of Unilever Corporation. Up until 2006, the company was well known for producing the most natural type of ice cream possible, usually with nothing more than 3 or 4 ingredients. In order to cut costs, Unilever reformulated many of their most famous ice creams. Ingredient lists now can be as long as 40 items. In fact, many items have been reformulated so that they no longer contain enough cream and natural sugar to be called ice cream. These items are now sold as “frozen dairy desserts”

Breyer’s Ice Cream is frequently confused with another brand of ice cream called Dreyer’s, which is common on the West Coast of the US. Although the names are almost identical, they are two different companies.

Chevys Fresh Mex Corporate Office

Chevys Fresh Mex

Chevys Fresh Mex was founded in Alameda, California, by Warren Simmons in 1981. The company quickly expanded to 37 restaurants in the following decade and was purchased by PepsiCo in 1993.

History

The company purchased the Rio Bravo Cantina chain of Tex-Mex restaurants from Applebee’s in 1999, however, the chain did not do as well as expected. Chevys Fresh Mex filed for bankruptcy in 2003. In early 2005, the company was purchased by Real Mex Restaurants, Inc.

Today, the company has approximately 25 locations, most of them franchised. Chevys Fresh Mex sells a variety of Mexican-style food dishes in a casual dining atmosphere. The company receives about 70 percent of sales from its dinner menu.

In addition to restaurants, the company offers a line of prepackaged, multi-serve entrees for retailers, under the Real Mex label.

At least 14 underperforming Chevys Fresh Mex restaurants, mostly in northern California, were closed on December 26, 2016. Among these were the Redding, Chico, South Lake Tahoe, Modesto, and Fresno locations in California.

Gordmans Corporate Office

Gordmans was founded when Dan Gordman married into the Richman family, who operated a small clothing store in Omaha, Nebraska. Gordman became a full partner in the company when he married Esther Richman. The company expanded and in 1948, was renamed Richman Gordman.

History

In 1975, the company opened a small store named the 1/2 Price Store, which offered merchandise from the Richman Gordman locations at 50 to 75 percent off. In 1990, the 1/2 Price Store had more than 16 locations, as well as 16 Richman Gordman stores.

In 1992, the company filed for bankruptcy and reorganized so that all 1/2 Price Stores were renamed to Gordmans. Sun Capital Partners purchased the company in 2008 and took it public in 2010. Gordmans is publicly traded on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol: GMAN.

Gordmans has 99 locations in 22 states, mostly in the Mid West.

In 2019, Stage Stores began converting other retail chains it owned into Gordmans stores, with the goal of having 700 Gordmans stores in 42 states by the end of 2020.

In May 2020, Stage Stores filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and began liquidating its stores. Although a buyer for Stage could have prevented liquidation, Stage later announced that they would proceed with going out of business sales at all locations.

All Gordman’s were officially closed August 29, 2020.

Fingerhut was founded in 1948 by brothers Manny and William Fingerhut. The brothers originally sold car seat covers, but soon expanded into catalog sales, which soon offered other items, such as tools, kitchen items, bedding, and towels.

History

The company has been sold several times over the years, including Federated Department Stores in 1999, Bain Capital Ventures in 2004, and currently to the Bluestem Group.

Fingerhut is an online retailer which offers a very wide variety of items, including iPads, curtains, Playstations, televisions, laptops, umbrellas, and more. The company differs from almost every other online company in that it has its own “Rent to Own” service, where customers can purchase items and make payments without using credit cards.

The company has come under fire recently for offering their merchandise at higher prices than most other stores, offering credit with an APR of 29.99%, as well as for annoying “robocalls.”

Marble Slab Creamery was founded in 1983 in Houston, Texas, by chefs LaPage and Penn. The original company name was Cones and Cream. The company was the first to use a frozen marble slab to cut ice cream and mix flavors.

The company was purchased by current CEO Ronald Hankamer in 1986, who changed the name and added a franchise option. The company has grown substantially in the past 15 years, especially in the franchise area. Entrepreneur Magazine, Fastest Growing Franchise, and America’s Top Global Franchises all have listed Marble Slab Creamery as one of the fastest growing franchises in America.

Today, the company has 391 locations across the US and in 11 countries, as well as Puerto Rico. In addition to ice cream, the company also offers brownies, cookies, ice cream cakes, and assorted cones, including the popular waffle cone.
