The company has 4 locations in Portland, with the largest being dubbed the “Powell’s City of Books.” The building has two floors, including a rooftop garden. Powell’s began selling and buying books online in 1993. The company remains in the family, with Michael Powell turning over control of the business to his daughter Emily in 2010.

Powell’s Books has offered free shipping on DVD’s since 2004. In 2010, the company announced that it had purchased Ann Rice’s library, a total of 7,000 books. The company is also a charter member of Google’s eBook service since December of 2010.

BuyCostumes.Com, along with its parent company BuySeasons, Inc., was founded in 1999 by Jon Majdoch and Jalem Getz in New Berlin, Wisconsin. The company sells costumes for a wide variety of purposes, including Halloween, plays, and Mardi Gras.

BuySeasons, Inc. was purchased in 2006 by Liberty Interactive Group, and now operates as a subsidiary. BuyCostumes.Com is listed in the Guiness Book of World Records for having the most people dressed as video game characters. The company filed for the rights to the wordmark “Orange Tuesday” with the U.S. Trademark and Patent Office. The word is associated with the Tuesday following Labor Day, as the start of the Halloween season.

The company maintains its corporate office and main warehouse in New Berlin, Wisconsin, but also has an additional warehouse in Bothell, Washington.

The store has an alpine type of design and covers 7 acres. The store sits on another 27 acres of park like grounds. The company states that their electric bill averages about $1,250 each day.

History

The company has more than 2 million visitors each year, with the day after Thanksgiving having the largest crowds, with as many as 50,000 customers. In addition to the brick and mortar location, the company sells more than 3,000 items via their website. Bronner’s offers gifts and decorations from more than 70 countries.

Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland is still family owned and operated. The company is the only authorized dealer for Precious Moments Christmas themed figurines. The outside of the location is decorated with a 17 foot high Santa Claus and a 15 foot high snowman.

In December 2021, Bronner’s spokesperson said that they have had difficulty finding employees for this season.

Headquarters are located in Frankenmuth, Michigan.

Schlitterbahn Water Park

Schlitterbahn Water Park was founded in 1979 by the Henry family. The company has headquarters in New Braunfels, Texas, just outside of Austin. The company currently has 5 seasonal water parks in Texas and Kansas. There are two more water parks being constructed at this time; one in Cedar Park, Texas, the other in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The word Schlitterbahn means “slippery road” in German, which the Henry’s thought suited the park. Most parks operate only April through September, although the park on Galveston Island has a small indoor section, which enables it to remain open all year.

The tragic death of a 10 year old child occured at the original park in New Braunfels, on the ride called Verruckt (meaning “crazy” in German) on August 7, 2016. This has kept most of the park closed until investigators determine exactly what happened.
