Books-A-Million, sometimes called BAM!, was founded in 1917 by Clyde Anderson in Florence, Alabama. The company started as a small newspaper and magazine stand on a street corner. Soon, Anderson took his profits and purchased a bookstore in 1964, which he named Bookland. Bookland is still in business, operating today as a subsidiary of Books-A-Million.

Today, the company is the second largest bookstore chain in the U.S. With more than 250 stores, approximately 5,500 full time employees, as well as an eCommerce site, it’s difficult to not find a one of these chains in any large city in America. The company is second in size only to Barnes & Noble.

In addition to the book stores, the company also owns a distribution and wholesale book subsidiary, American Wholesale Book Company, as well as NetCentral, an internet service company. The company recently acquired Yogurt Mountain in 2010.

Foodarama was founded in 1973 by Carrol Cox in Houston, Texas. Sometimes referred to as Cox’s Foodarama, the company operates a chain of grocery stores in the greater Houston area. From the single location, the company has expanded to 10 stores and approximately 1,000 full time employees.

The company purchased one store when Apple Tree Markets went out of business in 1993, as well as a Randall’s store that closed in 2006. Foodarama also operates 7 La Fiesta markets in the San Antonio, Texas area. Almost all locations offer ATM service, payroll check cashing, auto registration renewal, lottery tickets, CoinStar, as well as fax and copy service.

The company still has headquarters in Houston, Texas, and remains owned by the Cox family.

Harbor Freight Tools was founded in 1977 by Eric and Allan Smidt in North Hollywood, California. The original location was a very small building, with the name Harbor Freight Salvage. As the company expanded and grew, Eric became CEO and changed the name in 1985.

History

Today, Harbor Freight Tools has more than 700 locations in 47 states, as well as an eCommerce site. From the original two employees, the company now has more than 17,000 full time employees. US General, another mail order tool supplier, was acquired in the mid-1980’s. The company now has headquarters in Camarrillo, California.

Harbor Freight Tools is a discount tool supplier, as well as offering other kinds of equipment, depending on the location, such as farm tools. The company sells many of its own in house store brands such as Chicago Electric, Portland, and Earthquake.

In October 2019, Harbor Freight recalled one million pocketknives due to an issue with the lock when the blade was retracted.

The coronavirus of 2020 has been a crash for some businesses and a boon for others, such as Harbor Freight. Long lines and empty shelves for facemasks, an item Harbor Freight usually stocks, along with bottled water, and packaged snacks.

Shop ‘N Save Market was founded in Belleville, Illinois, in 1979. Formerly a part of the SuperValu chain, Shop ‘N Save is now independently owned, with more than 44 locations throughout Missouri and Illinois. The company has headquarters in Kirkwood, Missouri.

History

While SuperValu supplied many family-owned stores, it has had difficulty in recent years, keeping up with the competition from Walmart and Giant Eagle. Its decision to sell off some of the Shop ‘N Save markets was not an easy one, says a company spokesperson.

Shop ‘N Save Market continues to maintain their presence in the Missouri/Illinois area, with only one store closing in the past 3 years. The company has approximately 3,800 full-time employees. Most locations offer full-service pharmacies and bakeries.

St. Nicks Christmas Store

Founded in 1976, St. Nicks Christmas Store was the idea of Shawn Sealy, who loves Christmas and wanted a store that would bring the holiday to life every day of the year. The company is open all except for the first six weeks of the year. This gives employees time to overhaul the theme rooms, restock, and redecorate.

St. Nicks Christmas Store receives approximately 80 percent of its business between Halloween and New Years. Even in July and August, however, Sealy, who continues to be the sole owner of the company, receives about 80 visitors a day. Chris Davis is the visual designer for the more than 100 themed Christmas trees and 22 rooms.

The company has considered expansion plans, although no set date has been scheduled for this.
